I know it's supposed to measure the O2 level in the exhaust gas and then the ECU is supposed to use this info to adjust mixture etc. But how important is this on our 10 year old+ cars? Technology was a bit more basic back then. Does the ECU put much stock in the output of the lambda?
I replaced mine recently since VAGCOM was showing a No Signal error. Couple of weeks after replacing the unit I find the car surges at low speed/constant throttle. Quick search pegs the lambda as a possible suspect. So I unplug the new probe and now the car runs fine again. Is it really needed. What's the downside of not having one? Fuel economy? Performance?

) MRC chips since the lambda was changed so the ECU has been completely "rebooted" so to speak.
