The chip is a tiny glass bead imbedded in the key, if you open your "torch" key you might see it, held in by a dab of glue or mastic.
I have read that the immob pickup ring is plugged into the loom near the lock with a two pin connector, this can become loose, causing erratic starting. Try and find this connector and clean it, if possible tighten the contacts.

Looks like you have a fix. One more thing to check is to take the cover off the immobiliser box and check for dry joints, especially around relays, tags etc soldered to the board. The solder can get embrittled with the vibration over the years and intermittent. Couple of examples of that sort of thing here, window winder control box etc. I wouldn't run without an immobiliser, but might fit a hidden switch to disable it when needed. Not a happy day if it gets stolen..

Will try to fix the present unit.

First option for me is to keep the system standard and fully operational before I swop the ECU and other bits.

Once I start installing the upgraded ECU with the disabled immobilizer function and all the other upgrade bits I will have the present non intrusive tracking system upgraded to try and make it harder to steal the car.

And how it was fixed.

Still working on my car.

I have been trying to get to the connection.

Since working in that area the fault has gone!!!!

Will still do more checking

The signal is so small it doesn't take much corrosion to stop it from working, some good quality switch cleaner should sort it.
My avant has started doing the same thing recently, fortunately the ECU has RS2 non-immob software in it so all I get is the flashing immob light.

If the rev counter dies then I would bet the engine speed sensor (G28) is loosing its signal. Given that your sensor mounting block is damaged too....

Took the car out yesterday for a good run.

No issues it started every time.

Makes me think the immobilizer was a connection issue and I disturbed it. Will definitely get to the actual connection one of these days to do a proper check. My RS2 replacement ECU has had the immobilizer removed so I may just do the upgrades first.

As for the G28 sensor bracket I have place an order for a new one from Audi Tradition 18 euro not bad, 39.98 total with transport, more for the transport . The one on the car is broken but glued and will always be in the back of my mind when crossing a desert, when is this thing going to fall apart

At least you could buy it.

BTW, are you adding the Color= white to your posts? If so, don't.

Very lucky its still available. It would be an absolute mission to fabricate one. Don't recall changing any font or colour. I normally type the post in word and then copy paste into the forum.

Were this came from I dont know.

That'll be why.... Word sticks all sorts of markup into the text.

Why not just type it into the forum reply box instead?

It can take me a bit of time to write what I need to so its simple for me to do it in word and them just copy paste.

Will stop doing it and make time to type directly into the forum.
