I had the merry temperature gauge dance syndrome for a while too, then it seemed to fix itself...

Went to see the man, he tapped my sensor with a spanner, it works ok now
Had a look inside one of the sensors, there's a small PCB and the temp sensor connects to it with a spring, presumably the contact gets a bit corroded and it doesn't work properly, there's some silicon grease in there but I guess it all ends up down the bottom.. I'm going to take a couple of these apart and have a go at them with De-Oxit. Got to be worth it at 90 quid a pop. The one in my car is only a year old.

I'm glad you've worked out what the problem is John, after all your other water problems.

I think they were only 35 quid or so from VAGParts, maybe I'm wrong....
but definately, if you can get some duff ones working, its the way to go, cheaper to fix than replace, especially if it is something that has a habit of going haywire...!
