It was like 3 weeks between those starts, so I guess its not because of that.

I had same problem after installing a 3B in my 83 ur quattro... Which while having the flywheel out it was apparently dropped on its face which knocked in the tdc dowel and it started intermittently and ran real bad, eventually it wouldnt run and that when I took my volt ohms meter and checked the 2 crank sensors wires (both of them) there are 3 wires on them but 3rd wire is a shield so dont use that one. The RPM sensor was working but got nothing on TDC crank sensor pulled transmission and it was obvious it was knocked in too far.
