  • Wastegate advice required on lower chamber leak

    When checking the top chamber of the wastegate it holds the vacuum which to me indicates the diaphragm is ok.

    I then applied pressure to the lower chamber it raises the valve which is ok but its not holding the pressure, after 4 seconds the pressure has gone.

    Is this normal?

    Should the lower chamber be sealed so it does not leak?

    No matter if I apply a pressure or a vacuum to the lower chamber it leaks out ?

    With the top removed from the wastegate the center section appears to have about 1mm sideways movement.

    It’s fairly normal, the valve guide has some play in it and it leaks down into the exhaust.
    When the motor is running there’s some pressure in the exhaust which opposes the pressure leaking out.
    Obviously a new wastegate leaks down less than an old one but I seem to remember your car doesn’t have massive mileage?

      Put some soapy water round the banjo bolt, just to be sure it’s not leaking there.

        Don't forget, the valve and guide will both expand when at operating temperatures; the clearance will be tighter. Better to apply pressure to the top chamber to test the integrity of the diaphragm.
