Cooling fan only kicks in after engine shut down

I recently had a local garage replace my expansion tank (old one was slightly fractured) plus a coolant hose that was severely perished. Since then I don't know if something simply hasn't been plugged back in / knocked but when the engine is running the cooling fan no longer kicks in at 90 degrees (plus a notch or two)

I won't let the car go too far beyond that but as soon as I turn the engine off, the fan kicks in hard and continues to run for a while. The heater still works fine by the way and all coolant pipes that I can locate get hot.

Any ideas / thoughts? I should probably just take it back to them to investigate but thought I'd ask here first, maybe it's a simple fix.

    Car is an ABY Avant.

    Cheers guys

Fan switch/plug on radiator or relay.
Fan afterrun relay has its own temp sensor.

If this is the radiator fan switch then it's already connected (unfortunately). Where is the temperature sensor located as I couldn't spot it?

          Thanks

The fuses checked out fine but for some reason my car is missing the relay for the radiator fan.. but it's always been that way looking back at older photos.. odd?!

temperature sender feeds the gauge (located on the block under the water manifold) the switch you posted is the "sender" for the rad...

On my last s2, the 214 relay in position 6 is located in position 2. You can unplug the temperature sender on the base of the radiator, switch on the ignition and bridge two of the contacts together with a test wire. If your fan starts up, the circuit is good which would point to the sender either not working or not getting hot enough to trigger. The gauge sender is in a completely different place in the cylinder head and warms up before the water at the bottom of radiator gets hot enough to switch the fan sender.

Thanks, I think you may be onto something here.. I let the car get up to temp (just over 90 degrees) and the bottom of the radiator where the radiator switch plugs in is warm..but not hot. Put it this way, I can easily hold my finger to it for 5+ seconds.. air in the system maybe?

Maybe. If you can hold your finger to it, it is no more than 60 degrees.

And to be sure the fan works, as suggested before, remove the plug from switch and bridge the two connector with a wire, turn on the ignition.

Tested the fan switch by bridging the connectors and the fan came on, so at least I know that side is OK now.

That is a useful link, cheers. I'll keep digging.
