Help!!! 86 UR Quattro Engine disaster?

Can anyone shed any light? Picked up a bit of a project at the weekend very smoky (plooms of white smoke on start up) and a little noisy top end. Driving back noise turned to clatter then nothing - dead engine and coasted to a hault!

What damage am I likely to have done?
What is the likely cost of repair or should I source a replacement engine?
Who should I take it to? pref close to London or Oxford!

    Any help most appreciated.

At best bet hope its just headgasket done, but clattering normally spells bottom end problems.
Engines aren't cheap but theres one abit further north from me on ebay at mo for £300 i know the seller so he's genuine

The problem with cheap UR quattros is they are cheap for a reason... I'm rebuilding my WR at present and its not too complex but parts aren't the cheapest...

        WR engine

        Hi Gulf,
I'm selling the WR engine on ebay. Without pulling it apart i'm only going off what I was told when I bought it, and that was that it was OK!.
If it was me , I would dismantle it and renew all the bearings as a matter of course, after checking the tolerances on the bores. Check and renew any valve guides and rebuild the head.
If you are interested in the engine either PM me or ring me on 07718318067
We can also talk about a rebuild.
        cheers
        Andy

impossible to say without seeing it
have you tried turnig it over by hand??? take spark plugs out and turn crank pulley clockwise... if it turns freely and quietly then its hopefully not bottom end failure.
if it makes scraping noises or locks then it may be terminal...

Did the owner mention what the fault may have been? and was it worth it fo rest of car?

Thanks guys - Andy will give you call. Luckily the rest of the car is spot on - infact it is in truly amazing condition - no rust tears dings or dents just missing the original radio if anyone has one?

Not sure what your engine problems could be. I would take it to QST in haywards heath. Kim built my UR and knows them inside out. Also i have heard good reviews about Pete Berry white cottage quattros in Horsham. Newsh will shed some light on Pete as he knows him well
Get some pics of the quattro up mate, once its done and good luck

From personal experience I'd steer away from Kim, v.pricey and last time he had my UR he actually farmed out the work to someone else (although it was fine, I was left with a HUGE bill).

Used Pete Berry afterwards, seems ok although I never got my 'brain' back after it had been 'upgraded'......

Of course this is going back many years and things could be a lot different now, tis just my 2 cents worth
