Howdy - I seriously suggest you forget about tuning the beast until you establish a healthy starting point from which to baseline your expectations on. Don't get me wrong - that sort of power is easily obtained with bolt on parts and an ECU upgrade.

But you'll be down anywhere from £1000-2000 depending on where you get parts from

The S2 doesn't really have a 'surge factor' in standard trim - the boost profile is very conservative and you won't necessarily feel an obvious point when driving that the turbo has kicked in all of a sudden. A stock RS2 is different however - its pretty rank off boost and quite laggy in comparison with factor software - you really notice the boost when you nail the gas on an RS2.

Step 1 for you is to reset the ECU - pull its fuses for a minute and try again. This forces the ECU to forget all adaptation, old faults and any history of the engine running behavior... Means it has to build all that info up from scratch.

Step 2 is to fit a boost guage and go for a drive... On stock trim with ABY you should see ~1.1bar boost for a maximum of 15 seconds in full throttle from low revs in 4th or higher. This is called 'overboost' mode on the ABY. Normal max boost is 0.8bar. If you are not seeing these kind of values then you most likely have a boost leak - but you might also have a bad WGFV or TPS. Get a boost test done.

Step 3 is to check that the static timing of the engine is correct - the ECU does everything else dynamically so all you need check is that the crank and cam pulleys are aligned.

Get back to us when you have got thru that little lot - if that doesn't solve it then there are other things to check & suspect - coil packs for one, lambda probe for another and fuelling is another matter. The latter two *should* throw a fault code if running is extremely lean or rich - or if an air leak is fooling it. You could also have a faulty MAF of course - that is a very important input to the ECU !

Don't lose heart - when it runs right you will love it !

Actually I forgot the really first step - do a compression test just in case there is a head gasket problem.

That's interesting Paul That's exactly how mine behaves, pretty limp and then explodes at 3000rpm? (sorry for the hijack )

            Hi Steve1234,

Its Alex here from Allaudi, we are still struggling to find your lack of power, there are a few things that people have suggested that we can rule out. It is not a boost leak, we have a pressure kit (thanks to AndyP) it is holding that fine. The ecu is flagging no codes what so ever. We have changed the wgfv as it was making some strange noises it works fine now. We have tried a 3/4 pin sender as it feels like it is in limp mode, we have also checked your dump valve and tried a different MAF. Checked the turbo Still to no avail. There is no doubt in my mind that is isnt running right it is too flat but has no miss and idles fine so I don't think its a coil problem. Any other ideas are welcome.

VAG-Com it to make sure the ECU is seeing WOT so it goes into overboost, also check the altitude sensor.

What boost is it generating on a boost gauge?

Also is the cam timing correct?

Sounds like cam timing to me, if everything else is sorted then check that next. Has the car had a cambelt change recently?

A knock sensor normally gets reset when the ignition is turned off, so the car should drive ok for a short time, until a false knock is sensed.
That's the case on 7A/3Bs anyway. BTDT.

I also second that about checking the static timing.

                          Hi,

The previous owner of my car had a similar problem, no power / boost etc..
Root cause was the boost hose coming loose from the ECU.
                          Hope this info helps.

Lets talk numbers here - how much does this sick car generate - say with a carpet full of loud pedal in 5th from 30mph ?

This 'flat' feeling could be lack of boost (sick turbo or air leak), really horrible fuelling or bad timing.

A fuelling problem should throw a code, but an AFR meter would be needed to measure it. I reckon it could be timing related if all the boost & turbo issues have been checked.

But please don't forget a compression test either !!!!

The garage have tested for boost on the turbo, checked all vacuum pipes and all sensors, they have just changed the timing sensor behind the cam belt and the problem is still apparent!!!!! please can anyone help????????????????????????????? please forward me suggestions as they would gratefully be recieved. cheers everyone at s2 forum
