I bought one like in your first post and it's useless.
I then bought the vagcom cable and two plug adapter and downloaded vagcom lite. It works ok for basic fault reading on my ABY.
My friend has full vagcom and a proper rosstech cable and it's awesome.

I haven't seen the 3b connector but isn't it the same two single plugs, one black and one white, as on the aby?
Yes same plugs (although mine are missing so would have to rewire them) but 3B only uses the 000 10 channel where the newer ECU's use the 001-255 4 channels
I have recently got the obdeleven for my 3B but have not got it to work yet. Be aware that you need to be connected to the Internet for it to work, something I didn't realise at the time.
I'm sure there is a fuse in fuse box that can blow so you think it is not reading. I have fuse 15 in my head but I could be wrong. Someone else maybe able to confirm this. Not much help sorry...
You can install the Malfunction Indicator Lamp, I installed it in my old 3b, worked a treat or you can use the blink codes with a 12v LED and a piece of wire.
Cant seem to post the direct link but go to S2 central and then to technical data, electrical system, instrument cluster, MIL circuit have a read.
Helped me a long time ago to find faults with WGFV and ISV
