oilman suggested to me 15W50 for me MOTUL and im very pleased.very little consuption -
Same with me but seemed to use 5-40w quicker so after futher chats with oilman switching to 10-40w this week as part of my annual overhaul at MRCLeave a comment:

I stuck with 5w40 as recommended by Oilman. 10w50 is a good choice though.
It got to 100 degrees on my mapping session with MRC and didn't go over.Leave a comment:

It doesn't sound right to me. For what it's worth my RS2 has used half a litre in 5000ish KMs.Leave a comment:

I would suspect something mechanical ..
I would suspect some bad gasket, either headgasket, the front or rear crank gaskets, or the valve seals.
Do a compression test, if you have low compression it could be the piston rings causing the oil to disappear.
My ABY engine that I use HARD never uses any oil. (after my rebuild)
5000km and it hadn't lost anything (that I could see of the stick anyway)
Have someone follow you, floor it, then let go when you reach 5500 rpm, if it smokes then, the piston rings needs replacing.
Also have someone follow you just to see if it smokes all the time, or when cold and starting up.Leave a comment:

I don't think my RS2 used more than 0.5 litres of Synta Gold per 1000kms max.
As regards choice of oil, the only reason I used Synta Gold was because I used it's semi synthetic brother, Synta Black, in my old urS4, and had no problems whatsoever in 120000 miles of mixed driving.Leave a comment:

Mak,
I happen to have some proper oil "Silkolene Pro S 10-50", as your a local I can save you going to Halfrauds and sell you one of my spare tub's for less than your £9/litre.
You could just buy it online opieoils.co.uk, however if your desperate for a tub send me a PM. (I'll let you take me for a spin in you RS2
)
There are only a couple of oils I would use in my car and for me this is one of the best

Yes the crankcase breather circuit to scavenge oil. Changed mine with no difference on engine oil use but it was not as fouled as AAH/Angus RS2.you may use the wrong oil, but you have to check out the small oilhose, in the cranc vent, at the left side of the engine..is it ok, not swollow inside...or sticky...
or: the pistonskuirt are broken or a sidecracked piston; from the underside the oilinjektors to the oilring( 3 ring).... spec at the 3 sylinder..you may rebuild the engine..
Get a true fully synthetic 10-40w such as Motul (my present favourite) and check levels every weekend and/or after a long hard run.Leave a comment:

My Avant is using oil at about the same rate. I found out pretty much the same way, I'd recently checked the oil and it was about 1/2 way, OK I figured - besides my old Coupe didn't use much (about one top-up per 5k, even before the rebuild).
A few weeks later, and not many miles either, it developed a tappety sound.. concerned, I checked the oil at next opportunity and was shocked to find it about 1mm BELOW the min line!!
About 1l, and it was back to max. I'll be checking it every week from now on...
Short of it is, I dont get any smoke and I used to drive my bro's 3-series that used oil at about the same rate. Not a problem, according to BMW...
I'm gonna drain it and swap to my 'normal' 10W-50 when I get a chance, will be interesting to see how that lasts.Leave a comment:

Mak - letting it get to 1mm off the bottom of the dipstick when you know it uses oil is criminal imho.
You shouldnt rely on electronics to tell you when to add more oil as one day they will let you down at great cost to yourself.
Letting the oil get this low is not good for your engine or the oil itself as you make the oil run hotter and work harder when it is low.
Best thing you can do is drain the oil, change filter and replace with decent oil, just because magnetec is 7 quid a litre does not mean its not overpriced junk.
Also mixing it with a full synthetic like Castrol edge is a waste of money imho - stick to one oil.

Thanks Alistair I will check out the oil cooler. There is not any smoke out the back usually just the white smoke on start up.
BlownVR6 - I meant 1mm off the bottom of the dipstick. There is no smoke on deceleration or full boost.
I know that Magnatec is not the best oil but at £9 for a litre I thought it would be a decent oil to use. The gold bottle I was talking about is Castrol Edge and it is £14 for a litre bottle so it can't be that crap.
Also I have been checking the Instruction Manual for the RS2 and it says 'It is normal for the engine to use a certain amount of oil: oil consumption can be up to 1.0 litre per 1000km'.
So maybe the 1 litre that I am using is normal.
Also why would the car not be telling me that my oil is low. My S2 has a little yellow oil can that came up when the oil was low so the one on my RS2 must be broken.Leave a comment:

You may wish to read the S2 forum definitive oil thread:
If the car appears otherwise healthy I would try changing the oil to the 10w-50 recomended by OilmanLeave a comment:
