    2.5 TDi stroker question

I can't see any much difference between AAT and AEL engines for a stroker project... Same block and cranks, but pistons are different for some reason - according to family album anyway - not had much time over lunch to look properly.

    Am I missing something ?

Reason I ask is that I heard of a sick one going for stupidly cheap money and a little light bulb went off in my head for a lonmg-term engine build project !

The pistons 'might' be different if one set doesn't have the cut out for the oil squirters.
Or do both the AAT and AEL block have those?

Hmm.. Interesting that pistons 1 and 2 also differ from 3,4 and 5 in the same engine.

Snaffle it! You only want the block and crank!
Its possible that Audi redesigned the pistons to take the extra power of the AEL vs the AAT. The AEL pistons I have seen had a nice coating on them, but they were new!

You want to make sure that you get it with oil squirters, unless you know where to get new ones inserted.

Both the AAT and AEL have the squirters!

The AAT have slightly weaker pistons. Paul i have a AAT and a Ael engine in bits if you want to look sometime.

Rung the guy last night - he doesn't know which flavour of engine it is - AEL or AAT. Story goes it snapped a timing belt and he selling the whole car for buhger all money. Engine has never been opened but he reckons on some bent valves alright.

Don't care about head and valves but it probably means there will be a dented piston or two. Suppose there is a small risk of piston and bore damage if any valvetrain has collapsed into the cylinder. Dunno until I get a look inside at the weekend.

Another stupid question then - can the AEL/AAT pistons be re-used in a turbo-petrol configuration if they can take suitable (S2/RS2) piston rings ?

Or should I just budget for exotic pistons from the likes of JE on this project ?

The pistons are not much use to you. Just use stock ones, and get custon rods.

Thats what I figured... So unless a cylinder wall is damaged I should be OK.

                        Paul,
It's usually the cylinder head that takes the brunt of it! Sometimes valves bend, sometimes the cam snaps and other times the lifters get jammed in their bore often breaking the lifter gallery. You might see some dinks in the piston tops but nothing to worry about. Should make a good donor.
I have had to have one mains cap attended to as it was slightly oval. So as long as you carefully measure everything during reassembly, all should be ok. As Stu has said, the ghetto way is to source the correct length rods to use with stock pistons. Think they are available from Sten P. Bore wear is usually minimal on these.

                          'the ghetto way'

                          LOL

Agree with your insight on this and that any bore wear should be minimal - reckoning on just a hone job to get this into shape - probably about 5yrs down the road at the speed this engine build will take !
