So, I think my engine mounts are getting a little tired, after all they are 30 years old. Was looking around for replacements and ETKA lists mounts for cars with and without AC. I can find the left mount with AC, but the right mount is NLA and I cannot find any replacement except for the PN# of the mount without A/C.
I've done a lot of internet research trying to find out the difference between A/C & non A/C engine mounts. Unfortunately I haven't found any answers.
My best guess is it might have been possibly something to do with oil return clearance on ABY engines, but I can't confirm that. As far as the left side, I don't have any theory for that.
I did a mock test with Aliexpress engine mounts, they sent me x2 8A0199381 by mistake, the right side I knocked the bolts out and put the engine mount in backwards and it seemed a pretty good fit.
I'm ordering from Audi, 8A0199381 (Left non A/C) and 8A0199382C (Right non A/C) for my B4 80 with AAN which has the A/C compressor on the left side of the engine as opposed to the ABY on the right. So I'll have to wait and see what fitment will be like.
I think the only difference is that the ac ones are slightly stiffer to compensate for the extra weight. I did compare side by side a while back and apart from different colour marks, looked identical.

I have the exact same problem as B5NUT. I have ABY with AC and the left side mount (8A0199382) is available via tradition but the right side (8A0199382D) is not. I have also been thinking of using a non-AC mount on the right side but how long would it last?
I can confirm that the part numbers on the etka screenshot are correct even if it is a little strange that the only difference between left/right is the letter when it usually is the number.
There also was a discussion on the facebook page a month back where Alex said he was making natural rubber engine mounts soon.
My car left the factory in 1995 without A/C so presumably has the none A/C engine mounts. Around 10 years, 80,000 miles into its life I added A/C to the car. I did consider chasing down the engine mount and likewise new front springs at the time but didn't bother in the end. Accepting that coupes always look as though they've got their bums in the air, the car didn't look any different after the fitting of A/C as to how it did before.
Move forward another 18 years and 180,000 miles (actually the car can't move forward but that's another story ) and the engine mounts are still working fine so I don't believe they'll wear out more quickly with the wrong one.
The resonance point for the engine mounts may be different but the A/C compressor adds only a very small % to the total mass of the engine and g'box.
The mounts don't have to be different because of fitting the A/C components. The only thing that changes on the engine between A/C and none A/C cars in addition to fitting the compressor and bracket is the routing of the oil return pipe from the turbo. On engines with A/C it feeds into the wing on the sump.
