There is what is reffered to as 'Home Fried' chip sets knocking about, they're for the stock K24 7000 and don't require any extra parts other than an engine in good order. They will take an ABY upto 270-280 bhp and they retain the safety features of the stock set up, they were written by a guy named Paul Nugent, he's one of the chaps who started this site but I haven't seen him on here for years. It may only be 50 odd bhp more than stock but is quite a step up from the stock output and nothing like as expensive as going down the full RS2 spec route, you'll need an ECU that's socketed so you can change chips so it's worth looking out for one of these for sale.

If the 280 BHP maps aren't fast enough for you then you'll need to get a 3 bar map sensor fitted to the ECU, if your fairly competent with a soldering iron and working on PCB's one can change this yourself. Then you'll need all the other parts make your car RS2 spec, this use to be a fairly cheap way of getting quite serious power back when I joined the forum, however things have changed and there's no longer used RS2 turbos available for under £500 and manifolds for £250 in the for sale section as there was back then. I got a reconditioned RS2 turbo from German eBay for £480 inculding delivery, not much chance of getting one for that price now.
Anyone got bin-files for "Home Fried" chips ?
I have tried to copy a set of 264hp MTM and a set of 280hp ABT chips, both with no luck :/ (copy protected ?)
( Both worked in their "original" ECU but not in a "replacement" )
If someone got 280 "Home Fried" files available I can make a copy to those who want it for the cost of chips and shipping

PRJ made a verision of the 280bhp 'Home fries' chip set with a couple of slight tweeks, as far as I'm aware he's made all his Motronic work open source so the files should be available somewhere.

I know MTM chips use a scrambler board between the the chip and the socket to prevent copying, presumably ABT do as well.

Also I forgot to say given that now RS2 turbos are pretty expensive if I was looking for an upgraded unit then I contact Vidar in Norway. He's worked wonders with a stock looking K24, his newest version is probably better than an RS2 turbo or at least as good.

Any good computer repair specialist should be able to fit the sockets for you, it's not hard but you need the right tools and a very steady hand.
