    ABY S2 cutting out - Fault code 0231 / P0231

    Hi,

Was hoping for some advice if possible! I have an ABY S2 Avant, and in the past few days it will cut out while driving. Car won't restart, but if I leave it for 5 - 10 minutes it would run for another very short period of time (minutes) before cutting out again.

It feels as though engine power is completely lost, you tap the throttle when you feel this happen and for a split second the revs climb but it will then cut out completely.

I had a local garage plug in their Bosch diagnostic and it came back with 1 error with the code 0231 (or 005561 0231 looking at the printout I was given). Searching online for this refers to 'Mixture adjustment control' - the bloke in the garage then pointed out if you append a P to P0231 it refers to 'Fuel pump secondary circuit low'. I'm not sure where that came from really unless he knows it's a thing with older cars being read with newer diagnostic tools.. Fuel pump woes make sense I guess?

    Any thoughts or ideas??

    Thanks in advance

Is the fuel tank breather blocked? Do you get vacuum release when you remove the filler cap engine running?

Thanks for the reply Dave. I just ran it for a couple of minutes but didn't get any vacuum release when I removed the filler cap.

Is the breather pipe accessible near the rear wash bottle (right access panel in boot) or somewhere else?

ABY vents via the carbon canister which is under the front off side wheel arch liner. There is a little filter at the very bottom which can get blocked with dirt. It's also controlled by a little solenoid on the EVAP circuit. An easy way to check is just to disconnect the line in the engine bay where it connects to the breather pipe under the car.
Of course, could be lots of other things like failing fuel pump or fuel pump relay

Just to update this, I replaced the fuel pump relay and my issues have gone away.

Thanks again Dave, appreciate your help.
