I've just rang him and he's about today if you need to phone him.
    Thanks Jas and everyone else.

Sorry for the slow resposne but I've only just got access to the forum again.
The good news is that I'm now in Birmingham after getting the car going again. There is a definite problem with the crankshaft sensor now though.
I got it going yesterday afternoon and it managed to start (although it struggled) first time this morning.

Hopefully I'll get back to Plymouth ok this afternoon.

Thanks again guys, the support on this forum is fantastic!!!!

      Hi Dan,
How's the car now? Is the crankshaft position sensor sorted? I've just been going through your thread. Reads like a thriller. The highs... the lows.. it's alive!!! not it's not! yes it is!!
anyway, I reckon i'm just about to order a hall sensor and rope Stevie (dubbedup) into a bit of mechanical tomfoolery. I'm totally inexperienced with this kind of thing so if stevie says it's too much for him I fear i'll be paying a mechanic to do it. agh!
hope the lack of posting for a few days means you've just spent the weekend horsing around behind the wheel instead of under the bonnet.
      cheers

Had a similar event to Dan's today, car wouldn't start after a wee trip to shops, it's never not started in the years I've had it , S2's my daily driver and subsequently is started and stopped many times a day (had previously spent first part of today bedding in the new discs on the back roads.)

Car turned over alright but just didn't start, tried a few times, checked that I wasn't out of fuel and nothing had fell off, even though the discs/pads were reeking a bit I couldn't see that affecting it starting

Phoned for Roadside , once I'd figured out I was covered, said they'd be there in an hour , tried a few times , nothing. Decided to remove the ecu fuses, waited around 15 mins , replaced them and it started first time.

Obviously I've wiped any codes, will check tommorow if it starts, if not I''ll post the output, only thing I thought I noticed was that I didn't get the usual click/hum which I always think is the fuel pump/system when I turned the ignition on, but maybe I'm just hav'rin..., car seems to be putting up a fight as it heads for the big 50..

Dan , you got any update on your problem/resolution ?

very bizarre mate. Let us know how it is in the morning.
my battery goes flat when I leave it for a few days (battery could be gubbed and all) but this would reset the ECU so I don't think it will sort my problem out. I'm laying my drive over the weekend but i'll be fitting some time in for checking earth straps and poking about. Derek is coming down on Sunday and i'll bung my ECU in his car to tell me once and for all if that's the problem.
The only vagcom error I'm getting is hall sensor but i'm told that will happen if the engine isn't running (and mine's only turning over). Could be distributor gear or god kbnows what. i'll let you know if I find anything
          cheers

            Hi guys,

Sorry for not seeing this post earlier. I'm in the US at the moment and only just got access to the internet.
When my car died in Chester I left it for about 6 hours with the ECU fuses out. It started straight away once they were back in and since then (3 weeks now) it's started everytime.
The crankshaft position sensor seems to be quite tempormental but very easy to access unlike the hall sender that I replaced behind the camshaft.
I think that one of the problems I was having with the crankshaft sensor was that it was probably more than the 1.6mm (I think it's that but check S2central.net) away from the flywheel teeth.
Anyway, if you are gettng the crankshaft error code then just remove the sensor, make sure it is clean and free from debris (I also tapped it on the engine block but there is no science behind that!). Then trace the wire up to the plug on the firewall and give that a clean.
Sounds a bit simple i know but it worked for me.

Regarding the change of the hall sender. I cable tied the belt to the cam pulley in the similar way to how Jas' brother did it. Took a long time but that was because someone had locktite'd the camshaft pulley bolt!

Anyway, hope that both cars are soon up and running again. These sensors give absolutely no warning. I'll try and check the forum soon just in case you need anymore BTDT.

            Good luck with fixing them!

            Dan

P.s. Sorry for any spelling mistakes, I'm writing this in the back of a Ford Explorer on the freeway and it's a bit bumpy!

where's the crankshaft sensor on a 3B then? I'm pretty new to these shenanigans.
                cheers lads
and thanks for the update Dan.

Just an update to the post from me way back in April..

Now frequently (everyday) getting 515 (G40) error, looks like its time to change the Hall sender unit, gonna try sourcing one from Bosch (like I did with the lambda),gonna do the timing belt and the others when I'm there, using Bosch part number
                  0 232 101 020 to replace Audi 034 905 161

Dan mentions in this thread about tracinhg the hall sender cabling to the bulkhead (on ABY), anyone got a nice pic/description of the bulkhead connections and/or just what one is the hall sender connector.

                    Thanks

Replaced with Bosch part when doing timing and other belts , now fixed .
After some help from Paul, it appears the hall sender wiring does not go back to a bulkhead connector, but merges with the loom, so not worth trying to trace it further back.
