  • Audi RS2 non-starter, Motronic advise requested

    Morning all,
I would like to ask for here from the motronic experts. I managed to fc*k up the RS2 ECU . At least that's my thought. So I've methodically debugged what could be wrong, and I would like to hear the experts thoughts on something I might have missed and how to (if possible) fix it.

It all began with the engine rebuild. I had the car running last month and discovered an engine issue which had me pull the head off again. Issue was fixed and head was put back on, but I forgot to put on the earthing strap on the engine block which sits on the sump.

Stupid mistake, I know.... Which made the car crank over super slow, swapped for a new battery, still almost no cranking. Then I noticed the earth strap was not on the block, so mounted back on and presto, crancking over happily, but no starter anymore....

    - So I've double checked all fuses, all ok.
    - Double checked voltage at Camshaft position sensor and signal on the green wire with a old-skool multimeter, 4,7 volts and during cranking I see it changing a bit to 4,2 due to trigger window.
    - When starting, Fuel pump relay gets triggered
    - When starting, No spark
    - When starting No fuel on piston is squirted, no fuel smell either, nothing.
    - When starting not the slightest movement on the Rev counter dial on dash.

So my conclusion is that this mistake cost me the ecu. and now I would like to ask what are the options. One of them is to switch to Maxxecu, but I'd rather first try to get to fix this. But my motronic knowledge stops here.

Any advise to dig further? Thanks!

This thread should be helpful: https://www.s2forum.com/forum/techni...rt#post1045398

    Good luck getting it running

With the ground strap not in place, the current will have found a way back to the battery through cables not designed for this. I think most likely there is a ground trace on a pcb fried. Not that easy to find...

        Hi Jeffrey

There is a diode in the ECU which acts as a fuse and can be replaced, worth checking.
I can't remember which one but it will be in the 12v input circuit somewhere.
A forum search should bring it up.

Are the aan and rs2 ecus the same apart from the boost and fuel chips? If you suspect the ecu is fried, maybe a more readily available aan ecu will get it running and then someone competent can do the solder work to get the rs2 chips into the aan ecu?

Thanks for the diode reference. I will check it out, but that sounds like a viable root cause.
I will pull the ecu and open it up today.

AAN ECU can be converted to RS2 spec with a 3Bar Map, R201 resistor swap and the correct chips.
I have original RS2 software as well as stage 1 and hardware to get you going if you need it, just a matter of getting it to NL?
I also have a mate who's fixed quite a few of these ECUs here in the UK. He's got the gear to de-solder the chips and fit sockets.

So, I measured the resistance on the D901 and D900 diodes and D901 gives no reading at all, both direction. The other diode does give a reading. This week I will receive the diode in the post and will solder it on and test.

I've also discovered the MTM remap in '96 with 360HP label on it. Seal wasn't broken yet since 1997.
Thanks again for the tips gents. Keep you posted

This was the seal on the ecu btw.

                    Hopefully that will fix it

That MTM chipset should go really well

                      Close but no cigar.
Soldered in both diodes, but still no starter.

Next week the MaxxEcu arrives, PNP RS2. Let's see how that goes.
Anyways, thanks for the tips gents.

Oh no! I was hoping you would repair the original. Do keep it in case you can, or can find someone to go beyond the blown diodes…

It makes me pretty nervous for my own car if a broken earth strap can result in ECU destruction. Earth straps can corrode and lose continuity quite easily on older cars…
