If anyone has any answers to my last post I would be greatful. In the mean time I have taken most things of the old engine ,which is still in the car, I have to jack it up to get at the remaining bolts on the bell housing.
There is a one differance in the sump, the lug on the front to take the bracket for the alternator,is not there on the aan, so I deffinatley have to change the sump, an proberbley the pickup to, I will let you know when I take both sumps of if there are any other differances. In the mean time I have to say its very hard to mentain the faith.

Dual mass flywheel should produce smoother running due to it's design. It's far heavier than the 3B unit, so stick with the 3B flywheel. That way you'll get more of your horses on the tarmac. Clutches for the two are different, make sure you get the correct clutch for your chosen flywheel.

The old engine came out tonight, and I have taken the sump, and bits and pieces of.some of the sump bolts were very tight, and it was'nt so long ago I had them of,it could be I was a bit to forceful when tightening them,a thing to remember in the future.
I have to say if anyone suspects that they have a head gasket on the way out, to do it sonner rather than later,or at least get it checked out before it costs you your engine .
The oil that I drained out was not very nice at all and I am glad in a way that I am changing the engine and having the head done. When I first noticed the header tank getting pressurized, I kept an eye on the oil and coolent, and there was no cross contamination.I noticed a losse of performance one day just as I left my house and returned straight away, when I checked the oil I could see the differance straight away,so bewarned,

Is there anything else I should do while the engine is out. Cheers Lou
Lou, that's a good question, but it really depends on the ultimate goal you have for this engine. If you are thinking of keeping it stock, then just give the engine a good check over and replace as necessary. If you are planning any power upgrades anytime in the future, then there are a few things that are definitely worth thinking about getting done now.

Keep up the good work, you'll get there in the end.

I believe cross contamination of oil and water is faily unlikely on these engines, if you look at the distance between the oil and coolant passages on the head/block.

As I have the engine out now' and have access to the engine bay, are there any jobs you think I should do, I have replaced most of the vacume hoses, and re routed a few of the new sensor gables, that I had replaced before the engine came out and cleaned things as much as I can. Any other things anyone can think of please let me know.
Other than that, I have found a few things about the the differances between the aan and the 3b. The sump is quite a bit differant, I will try and post some pictures, but in saying that the bolt holes all line up.Defo the front pulley is differant, the front stub mount is differant, the oil pump and water pump, the metel pipe on the breather system, the thermostat housing and the water take of pipe at the back of the block, which is plastic and not metal,I am keeping this on as the 3b one is a little corroded.

                        Hi Lou,
I think it has been said before, but both oil senders, both senders in the water manifold, clutch (definately worth replacing as the engine is out) and the 2 water link pipes which are hard to get at.
PCV system is worth a look, it's hard to get at when engine is in...
Its also well worth checking the pipes around the brake bomb area, maybe some new clips would be worthwhile there. Mine leak and are a real pain to get at...
Hope its going well, and you get her up and running again soon....!

I have a new clutch 3000mls,both sensors on water rail replaced, and the short waterpipe , By PCV do you mean the breather pipes on the passenger side of the engine, and how do I check the brake bomb.

                          Cheers LOU

PCV is all the black rubber hoses around the rear of the engine, joins to a metal pipe up the offside, and on to the rear of the camcover, also with a couple of valves near the heater hose area and a sort of dump valve looking thing on the near side of the engine... the rubber turns to jelly, easier to do now... quite expensive though, some people have put a catch tank in instead, but just check the hose condition, if they are fine. leave them....
By brake bomb, I just meant to inspect the hoses to the 3 way joint above the brake bomb, accessible while the engine is out. If there is any sign of leaking round the one use Audi clips, cut them off and replace with decent quality clips... thats all. Let's hope the brake bomb is fine, but either way its easily replace d with everything in place... dont worry about that now...!!!!!!!
