    It's Running Again

Got the car started tonight. Let it turn over until the oil pressure came first - that took a while. When it started for the first 5 minutes there was a horrible tick ing noise - but that went away after it got warmed up - I'm assuming it was probably a hydraulic tappet since it has the 7A exhaust cam they will be moving a bit more than they ever have (Is that right?)

I have removed the aux radiator - Newsh(John) has supplied excellent lumps of ali for that.

I have removed the air con as well - It is soooo easy to get access to all the hoses - if they aver pop off t will be easy to put them back on from the front of the car.

One question - I think I have my power steering belt really tight - but it seems to vibrate a lot - how tight should it be?

    I'm happy again

                Doug,

Fantastic news mate...well pleased for ya. Top job...not that scary once you've done it once is it? and at least you can be happy/assured with your ownworkmanship. Make sure you fit those check valves that Mark mentioned otherwise your washer bottle will just drain until it is at the same level as the jets. If you don't have any give a shout as I ended up getting 4 of them (its a long story and not as daft as it appears!!) so the spares are doing nothing. They are brand new too.

You now see what I mean about access without the aux rad and air con removed....excellent eh? I agree that John's (Newsh) hose plugs were superb...@Newsh, make some more and flog them cos they were brilliant. I have bought a new 50 row oil cooler that I am gonna shove in front of the main rad low down for a good reason..just need to order a thermostat and hoses!

Let the CC cool down and enjoy your ride! See you in a few weeks @ Greg's as I will be back on the road soon too. I guarantee that this is not it for 2004...you'll will not resist the temptation!

                Well done,

I'm really chuffed with the bumper - cheers Sal - It has one bracket broken off an the other is about to break off - I looked at it tonight and it only need 4 sheets of metal cut to shape to hold them on and it will be stronger than standard. An indictor adn a spot has a crack but they will do just now.

so whats the next mod to the beastie now mate?
I have bought the wheel, short shift kit and intercooler mister and never got round to fitting them - Like Mark says the modding has to stop for a while - I have neglected lots of stuff round the house (and the GF) becasue I don't have the time, money or energy to have done it, and it's all because of the car.

@Mark - I will check tomorrow if they have them fitted in the bumper part of the hoses - It has the hoses and the t-piece - didn't notice what else was there.

@Lee - It is not scarey at all - just time consuming - I am soo glad I did it myself - I don't even want to think how much a garage would have charged for the work I did - they may have been quicker (still would have been days, not hours) but I know I have done it right.

I will resist spending/modding for the rest of the year

                    Doug,

                    Weyhey! Nice one

I'll put money on your upgrades continuing through this year

Bet you can't wait for Mik to get over here now

That 'ticking' noise will be the hydraulic lifters. It's usual for them to sound like that if they've been removed from the head. It usually goes by the time the fan has cut in.

Doug, looks gr8, did you say you were happy???? Regarding the power steering belt, yes it does have to be pretty tight otherwise she will squeal on full lock. Also, have you fitted the metal guard(s) back?

                      regards,
                      Chris

I'm that deperate, I'm picking him up form the airport - 200miles to Gregs - should get some mapping done then On the M74, M6 :eek2:

It went after teh car got warm and the fan cycling started - it is thick oil - 15W60 so probably took a bit longer to stop that noise. It was a releif when it did stop!

Yes - there is one guard - the one that bolts onto the waterpump housing - it sort of vibrates pretty close to that - I will tighten tomorrow.

Great to hear you've got it back up and running -can't wait to hear what output you finally get. Your credit card will only just have cooled off before you discover the next "must have" mod.

Be careful on the M74 by the way. This is my home patch and its crawling with cops! Look out for bridges and sliproads - Silver Merc C Class reg SO03??? and lots of marked Merc deisels. They got me last year by sitting at the top of a slip road.

Hope to see it in action at Gregs.
