looks like there are loads of marks to line up simultaneously but i'm hoping that my old favourite of "sticking it back as it was" would see me through this difficult time.
that and scratching my head with a screwdriver whilst gazing under the bonnet like I have a f*@king clue what i'm doing. hmmm

I dont think that you can go far wrong there mate.

        Remember, confidence is the key.

Look confident with the spanner and it will all come together... ;-)

Have you ordered the dizzy then?

watch me remove the tamper plate and see if I look confident. haha.
aye i've got several hundred threads bookmarked to keep me right in my efforts. just wanted to get confirmation that replacing "as it was" should mean the timing will remain right.
haven't ordered the new dizzy cos I don't know whether to pay dealer £150 and give them my old one or pay this chap £45 to replace the hall sensor, rotor arm, cap and gear http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...3875&rd=1&rd=1
I know that a new one would be ideal but funds are tight and in an ideal world I wouldn't be replacing the dizzy at all.

haha. I take it you don't think replacing it as I found it will be enough mate? i'm probably just imagining it will be worse than it is. there's enough info there for me to figure out where the marks are to check. although i dunno about shifting that weight forward in 3rd gear with a half flat tyre. sod it. i'll give it a damn good go.

Knight Rider. Fourcircle has a habit of asking for a bit of assistance and then just goes ahead and does it himself anyway

Plus, i dont like my technical experience coming into question here as well

Just I am more from a Pre 67 VW background, so all these wires and computer chips is new to me

                      That sounds all too familiar...!

I reckon, would well be worth your time pushiong the car in top gear to line up the mark in the dizzy just as it is now... that way, at least you can definately put it back exactly as it is right now... its not that hard to do that bit...

I wouldnt want to do it and try and put the dizzy in with no points of reference at all, I just did mine and it worked ok, as has been said, confidence is the key... but with a little bit of idea thrown in for good measure...!
                      Good luck

If i were you i'd do it properly, get all the marks ligned up etc. If you try to guess it can you really be bothered to take it to bits again if it still has no spark?
Whats the history of this car? did you buy it damaged? has the engine run whilst you've had it?

                        Martin

thanks lads. you're both right of course. i prefer to do things properly. half the problem is my inexperience in finding the bits that have marks to line up. I can push the car to line up the dizzy marks. i'll just print out the reams of info I have any try to find the other bits to line up too. i'm sure i'll get there.

history is - i bought the car with rear damage, drove it for a few weeks with no problems at all and then the ****** died on me 100 metres from my house. since then my wife gave birth to my son and i've built a driveway. and the s2 has just sat there. so now i'm making an effort to get it running and then i'll be getting the bodywork fixed. mechanically everything seems sound (well.. until the hall sensor went). engine only has 110,000 (ish) miles on it so it's a cracking car.
the big problem (bigger that replacing a dizzy) will be convincing my wife that I need to keep the car once it's fixed. otherwsie i'll need to sell it to buy a family wagon.

but first thing's first - changing the dizzy. as long as the missus doesn't find the usual 100 things for me to do this evening i'll be out to have a bash at that dizzy.

                          cheers for all your help.

All you need is a 27mm socket to turn the crank. Or use the crank locking tool. Remove the spark plugs if you're a little weedy.

Here are the timing marks you need to line up:

One on the crankshaft pulley/damper and the timing belt lower cover:

The camshaft pulley and the 'V' mark on the cam cover:

The '0' mark on the flywheel with the bell housing:

                            And finally the distributor:

woohoo! got myself some scraped hands and arms, snapped a spanner and shouted F*@k when my neighbour was walking by with his kids but I got there. Lined up my marks but as I was turning the crank the rotor arm wasn't moving. i fiddled with it and there was a bit of play, tried it again and it did move. lined up the marks on the crankshaft pulley and camshaft pulley but the rotor arm wasn't lining up. kept trying and the rotor arm stopped moving again. "aha", says I. "there's something wrong there." And when I finally got the dizzy out the plastic gear has a huge lump missing out of it. I couldn't find the bits though. Will this be a big issue?

so my next decision... buy a new dizzy at £150 ish from the dealer? or pay £45 to get it refurbished by this bloke http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/petercrago1962. I'm pretty skint just now but there's a lot to be said for a brand new, warrantied dealer part. hmmm
