    Crankshaft lightening

    Any BTDT?
I was looking at some companies and there prices are not half as bad as what i thought

I saw Mark H has had is done, the up side is less mass for the engine to spin but the only down side i can envisage is that engine braking is going to be reduced?

    Any thoughts on this?

    Cheers James

Becareful where you go for this, I'd seek advice from the obvious e.g Corey, Doug etc, our 5 cyl is hard to do correctly due to the firing order, not the same as doing a regular 4/6/8 cyl. Ask if they have done it before?!

There are other possible problems/down sides, stalling, rough tickover, gearbox syncros get a harder time, less torque/ acceloration.

Go careful on the lightening, or the balancing man may not have much left to play with.
I'm not sure about engine braking though. A lower compression ratio should give you less engine braking/less pumping losses IIRC.

Give Phil a call at Bassett down. He can get the crank lightened and then balance the assembly for you.

            Thanks Mark,

Do you find the engine braking is reduced alot?

Engine breaking is more a ****ion of the pumping effect of the engine on a closed throttle and is effected more by compression. so lowering the compression ratio will have a bigger effect.

                James

I haven't noticed any difference in engine braking.

                Cheers

                    I think so Jamo,

Price is about for Crank lightening and edging and balance £220, which i thought was quite resonable.

But my "list" is getting bigger and the power is creaping up, so i am either going to slow the build down or punish a few cards

I know what you mean, I think i'll add it to my big list of things.

Was hoping to have the car started this month but may have to delay a while to save up even more

Are you guys using a lightweight flywheel in conjunction with the lightened crank?

                        Cheers,

has anybody a good answer, why better the light crankshaft?
i read a few books about it in motorsport, but nothing any good in serious racecars.

Lighter crank = less intertia = better acceleration

how about the ballance between rods+pistons/crank.(i mean weight difference)
the pistons wants to fly up from the cylinder.
why has the high rpm race engines very hevy weight crank?
