    Further developments...

    Car now has 5 correct Bosch plugs. Still misfiring though.

    Discovered that the problem is with the first cylinder - closest to the front of the car. Worked this out by disconecting each of the injectors one at a time.

    Then looked at the coil for this cylinder and discovered that plastic has melted out of the coil
    Not sure why I didnt see it before.

    I was wondering what might have caused this I dont want to put a new coil in only to have it get damaged again. As previously mentioned, I have tightened the plugs before the problems began. Could it be that some exposed wire has shorted the coil and damaged it ? Also I assume the fuse I blew was as a result of this coil, but hoped someone could tell me what fuse it is in the picture in my last post.

    Thanks guys.

        That fuse is for engine timing.
        Listed as "engine timing III", engine timing I & II being the ones under the red "Motor/Moteur* cover.
        Sounds like a short circuit somewhere.

          Thanks for the comments,

          Having totally removed the coil pack, it is clear that all the coils have been changed before (each wire has been cut, and re-joined with solder and heatshrink covering).

          Now trying to decide if it would be false economy to replace just the faulty coil. Cant see when the coils were replaced before.

          Having checked the forum I see some people have gone for all 5 when putting things right where as others have opted for a conversion that does away with the coilpack.

          Is the "conversion" expensive, I cant seem to find a price ? Also anyone have comments about doing this ?

              As the writer of the 1.8t coilpack conversion DIY instructions (used by 034 and Apikol to develop their kits), I am always interested in any ignition/coil pack posts, including this one. As far as I can see, your car has had coil problems before, at least to some degree (witness the replacement coils). What I think happened lately is you've somehow ended up with a dead short in a coil (probably No. 1) and have blow the ECU fuse. In the short run, you need to replace the No. 1 coil and then replace/reset the ECU fuse (wherever it is for an S2). At that point, I suggest that you go through the diagnostic procedure that I wrote for the AudiWorld UrS4/S6 FAQ:

              http://forums.audiworld.com/s4s6/msgs/149788.phtml

              That should help you figure out if you have other coil issues coming up.

              The 1.8t coil pack conversion can be done as a DIY relatively inexpensively (there was somebody selling all the parts for 60 pound here the other day - that price is way below cost by the way). On the other hand, the Apikol kit is high quality and uses the latest coil packs (115 R's) and is easy to install.

              In US$ replacing the two OE POS's and five OE coils runs to about $1000. The Apikol kits were about US$400 last time I looked. I did the first DIY at about US$260.

                Dont bother with the 1.8t coil packs, put it this way they are on revision J of the coilpacks.

                The S2 packs last about 10 years.

                My friends with MK 4 1.8T's are forever replacing them.

                In other words it's false economy, stick with the OEM ones ( Beru ) that you can get from Audi / GSF / Vagparts

                  I thought most of the feedback on the "conversion" was positive, but as you point out it may be a false economy.

                  Havent got the funds to replace all 5 just at this time so just getting one for now. I am assuming that one new coil wont make the others fail prematurely?

                    They are good because they remove the POS, but they don't like heat.

                    If you were going to do it go something like the 034 highoutput coils

                      Agree with Jamo slightly here the J model coils are very prone to failing because of insulation but the coils from Apikol are the R model which are far different... as regarding false economy i disagree with this ...conversion you bypass the POS and coils which all in would cost you £600 to replace the lot....If one coil goes you are looking at £80 to replace and the R coils are £24 so the coils would have to fail 3 times to not warrant the change and having the POS out of the way is much better for fault finding and cost of replacement...my 2 pence worth

                            Jas IIRC yours died suddenly due to a combination of obsessive engine bay detailing ( ) and knackered coil packs. Did you see a big performance improvement on replacement.
                            I ask because I am a little unsure that gradual performance loss can ever be explained by 'a wiring/insulation' issue. Surely it will fail to work or not.

                              Are many people running the conversion, would any like to comment ?

                                I didn't have any perceptible performance loss before I replaced them no, that I could tell. (other than the misfiring from hell when they went belly up)
                                The water ingress from the cleaning was, in a weird kind of way, a blessing, as they didn't look like they'd have lasted much longer.
                                After replacement I noticed a better, crisper throttle responce, but then it'd not long had new F5DPOR's. The car seemed to boost much more aggresively.
                                Also much improved mpg results, but then a new lambda was also fitted around the same time.
                                Sorry Alastair, it's the best answer I have mate.

                                Fallen off the fence.

                                Reasons I choose OEM over the cheaper 1.8T setup were five fold;
                                1/ Didn't want to have to chase coilpack revisions if they gave up,
                                2/ Didn't want to have to run with the cover off,
                                3/ Didn't want to have to use that "other" cover,
                                4/ The OEM versions were "fit and forget",
                                5/ Designed for the job.

                                Reasons for not using the high output versions;
                                1/ Price, they aren't far off OEM,
                                2/ Having the mount the coilpacks,

                                Downsides of the OEM;
                                1/ Splicing in the new ones, though it didn't particularly bother me personally.
                                2/ Price over the 1.8T versions.

                                As said above, each to their own. Fit whatever system you like, it's your car and your hard earned
