    Flywheel

I would like a lighter flywheel, can anyone here tell me if the lighter one piece 3B flywheel (which can be lightened further) can be used on the ABY engine in place of its dual mass flywheel?

I am guessing that I would have to use a 3B clutch cover plate to fit the 3B flywheel with an ABY friction plate to fit the splines on the six speed gearbox's shaft, or are the shafts the same?

Also guessing again, does the 3B spigot bearing need to be changed to accept the six speed input shaft?
Are the engine timing reference 'lugs' on the 3B flywheel in the same positions as the ABY too, as the ignition system is different??

I am sure that I read about this being done somewhere before, but for the life of me, I just can't remember where I saw it.

I must like making things awkward for myself :wacked: .

    Cheers,

    Mark.

Mark - I posted the price for QSTs answer to the dual mass in the transmission section > which ABY Clutch

I have asked what options Dialynx do, not had a reply yet though.

Ask Beppo about this, he should know as he is doing a 6-speed conversion on his 3B.

Mark, I think the dual mass ABY-ADU flywheel is thicker than the 3B one. difference might be compensated by the aluminum spacer put between engine block and 6speed gearbox compared to the 5 speed. But given taking out the spacer will work, must be seen if imput shaft on 6 speed gearbox would be too long to fit.

Here is definitly needed a feedback from someone who has already done the job.

Mark - Yes it HAS been done before, and no I can't find the history either. Mihnea and I exchanged some info on this way back when sometime...

The 3B flywheel is lighter (making a free-er revving engine) and does bolt straight onto the crank. Would have to check ETKA if 3B crank is same as ABY - if not I'd be concerned about balance, but if you are going full monty with Carillos etc then you'll be getting that done anyway... talking of which I need to chase someone else about a reputable machine shop in UK that can do that for our funky cranks..

Crank ref sensors on 3B flywheel are in the same place as ABY. Thats definite.

I think Mihnea posted that the ABY and 3B clutch covers were interchangeable, but I can't remember if the 6-speed input shaft splines are different from 5-speed. Something tells me they *might* be ...

Marco has a very good point about the spacer needed in the 6-speed ABY with the DM flywheel. I think you need to retain it so as the input shaft engages properly with the friction plate and locates in the spigot bearing correctly. Surely if you had to remove the 6-speed 'box spacer for a fit with the 3B flywheel and clutch then the gearbox and/or engine would have to be relocated ?

Its Friday night, I haven't had way enough beer yet. Things are WAY too busy in work to even spell 'S2' and just to top things off today, a ****** power surge killed the PSU on my beloved iMac..... so apologies if I ain't making 100% sense on this one !

Can someone explain why it is tricky to balance our cranks?

I will need this done, and I want to make sure the machine shop knows how to do it - so some technical explanations will help me suss out if they can do it.

If you want any measurements made of the aby setup, mine is in bits, so now would be a good time to ask. Beetie might have a 3B in bits for comparison purposes.

Thanks for all the replies, it'll help me work something out .

Doug, where is this spacer, is it between the bell housing and the block?

                  Cheers,

yes - between the bell housing and block. I tried to find a pic on ETKA but it doesn't show it. If I remember correctly I don't think you can just throw the spacer away - I think it would take some work to fit the block straight to the bell housing - there are large dowels in it to line it up - I wasn't paying too much attention to that - I can take some pics of it tomorrow.

I was told that if I was fitting a 6 speed to my 3B then I would need to fit the DM flywheel too. This would seem to be not so good after reading what you guys have to say, I'll see what I can find out tomorrow as I'm seeing the guy thats done a few gearbox swaps on these.

                          It can be done

If you remove the spacer between engine and gearbox. Use ABY clutch on singelmass flyweel and move engine back.

It has been done befoure and I´m gone do it again.

@Beppo - I love the way you say 'move the engine back' like its as simple as changing a spark plug !

Must admit that such a shift rearwards would reduce the weight over the front wheels a little and perhaps reduce understeer as a result of that.
