    dual-mass flywheel question!!

    Hello everybody.

after spending a lot of time searching for the problem with my S2 (93 ABY),i think that i have found it,, as often it's something pretty simpel but becouse of the strange faults that where occuring(no spark or signal to the injector's)it took me quite some hours.

I found out that there was no scope signal from the reference sensor(62 degrees before tdp)mounted on the crank case next to the engine rotation sensor
after taking a look at the flywheel of a UrS6 i saw that it had a small metal square notch point welded to it (so it seems)witch was missing on my flywheel!!

Through this forum i found someone who has a dual mass flywheel for me ,but i want to be sure that the metal notch is atached to the flywheel and not something else, can anybody confirm that? and if possible with a picture of the flywheel with the metal notch on it?? and is there any difference in flywheels for ABY from 93 up to 96?

    jeroen.

I've only ever seen pins inserted in the flywheel for this purpose... They are an interference fit in a hole in flywheel. Never seen with a 'small metal square notch' though. Someone on here must have photos - I'll see what I can find...

DM flywheel from AAN, ABY and ADU should be same in all regards.

This is a good opportunity for you to consider the single mass flywheel from a 3B, RR or 7A engine... Its lighter so gives the engine a more free-revving ability. Not as smooth as the DM flywheel as it is designed to reduce engine/drivetrain vibrations. Different character with the single mass flywheel.

Downside is you need to change the clutch to a 3B style one and the little needle bearing is different. Pretty sure the flywheel bolts are different too - they must be torqued up carefully - whatever you decide to do. I can get you torque values from the OFRM.

The pic in the linked thread is of a 93 ABY DM flywheel.

There is a small metal square on the back of the flywheel i'll take some pictures of mine off of an AAN dualmass flywheel tomorrow.

You would not be the first person to lose their flywheel timing pin. This also happened to one of our Vancouver BC UrS-car owners on his 92 S4 AAN. He was able to weld a piece of metal to the flywheel to replace the missing piece. There are spacing tolerances in the Bentley.

This may help a bit too:

            fantastic!! that's it!

strange how it could get nokked off??? it happened when i changed gears at high rpm!

I want to keep the dual mass becouse i enjoy the smooth running of the engine.
Ross offered me a flywheel "send" and whell for €75! wich i think is a good price.
it could be that the square metal notch is stil lying at the bottom of the gear box and that i could weld it on again but as i work at a audi dealer i can't leave the car in the work shop for a week sourcing another flywheel...

            thanks jeroen.

If misery wants company, you might "enjoy" this thread posted by one of our Vancouver BC UrS-car club members. There is a nice photo further down the thread. He was able to fix the problem by making a "pin" (square bar stock) and getting his father (a millwright) to weld it back on through the starter hole.

                  thanks for the pictures!!

I don't know the dimensions of the metal notch! and if i would i doubt that i could weld it on trough the starter hole.......? have to take a good look to be sure but my foot is broken so won't be repairing the car soon (it's been standing still for months now).

for me it might be easyer to just remove the gearbox and replace the flywheel.

Has any one here ever had a problem with the dual mass element in the flywheel?since the one on it now is good, and i am not sure about the one i'm getting

thanks for all the pictures and answer's.

                  jeroen.
