    Oil in turbo hoses

Is it normal to have oil residue in the turbo hoses or does this mean something is worn out on the turbo.I read a thread where someone said that it was good ther was no oil in these hoses,so now thinking something not quite right

Not the ideal thing to have but a lot depends on the mileage of the car, how it's driven- a lot of town driving ( low speed/stop/start) is the worst as there is always a small amount of oil seepage-cleaning the intercooler is part of the latest audis service shedule- if you don't go fast enough it won't get burnt off.
clean out the oil and intercooler, you can also check the play in the turbo by wiggling the compressor wheel- small amount in/out is ok but anything more than a tiny amount up/down side to side will cause problems.
clean it all out and take the car out for a good long blast to clear the system out, give it a week of mixed driving town/motorway and check again. If the turbo is fookd it gives you the chance to uprate!

I'm no expert but having wondered why I had some side to side shaft play ( center towards the periphery of the housing ) on my only 1 year old turbo, I asked around... A mm worth of side to side play is fine as these aren't ballbearing turbos and while the engine is switched off, there isn't any oil pressure in the turbo journal bearing of the the shaft to "float" on, BUT In and Out play ( coldside vs hotside movement ) of the shaft is a big no, no as the thrust bearing shouldn't have any play !!!

As for residual oil, I always see a bit of it when I dismantle my metal pipe from the turbo hoses but never to the point where I could actually see oil dripping from it....

That sounds like your breather system to me.....pull the intake hose on the front of the cold side and check the metal pipe which connects about 1/2 way up to it. you'll probably see some oil seeping out which then gets sucked into the turbo and then coats everything following it.

Totally agree no end float but up and down is ok as long as it is not excessive as the quote above says the shaft sits in a body of oil within the bearing

Totally normal to have some oil in there it comes form the crankcase breather system (PCV), the harder you drive it the more oil you get. This is why some people disconnect the PCV and replace with a catch tank, I did this for a while but got fed up with the smell of oil in the car so went back to the PCV.

noticing a fair bit of oil in mine, yet to check the turbo but spools fine with no nasty noises. As i have fixed my pcv, wonder if its just residual kak thats finally being moved about?

The radial play maximum for the ur-quattro RR engine is 0.2mm - I doubt that any S2 engine is much different.

Oil (specifically breather condensate) is absolutely normal in these engines. It depends how long and how hot the engine's been run, and on what oil, and most particularly whether the engine is in general airtight.

Worn seals - to some extent the cam and crank seals but mainly the rear crankshaft seals - can admit parasitic air that carries oil vapour via the breathers into the inlet air tract.

A lot of oil in the hoses is more likely to mean a worn rear crank seal than any worn turbo seals. A seriously worn turbo seal can produce enough blue smoke to stop all traffic in Guildford High Street. Ask me how I know.

And another perhaps surprising factor - the dipstick O-rings. The dipstick should have a really firm "click home" feel - the O-rings cost pennies.
