Do you realise that the block will have to come out - even if the only thing you are changing is rings?

While you are doing that, there are a lot of things that have to be replaced, bolts/gaskets.

Ehn the head is off it should be leak tested and skimmed.

You might discover the reason for worn rings is actually damaged bores so a rebore might be needed - that is big money as you need new pistons, might as well put uprated rods in. Balance the crank.

This could end up being a huge job - this is what has happened to me - and the car will be off the road for another 6 weeks.

dough: engine head is allready restored, and is like new. i hope that my pistons are ok. New one are pretty expencive (kobleschmitz set 1300eu ops: ).
the car goes ok, it pull like rocket, the problem is only white smoke, and oil consumation, it needs about 0,5l/1000km

If it is just the smoke , it could well be the turbo or valve stem oil seals. valve stem oil seakls can be changed without taking the head off if you have the correct tools.

Check the compression of each cylinder first specs are:

            9 Bar to 13 Bar
            Worn is 7 Bar
Max limit between cylinders is 3 Bar.

If there are any low cylinders - you can test the rings by putting a small amount of clean engine oil in the top of each cylinder - redo the compression test and if the low cylinders match the others then that shows you have worn piston rings.

doug_rs2; i have yust change valve steams in engine head. so my head is ok. It could be turbo or piston rings. I will try your test with compression.....
do u have any idea how can i check turbo for oil leaks?

I had blue smoke coming out the back that was due to a broken crankcase breather pipe

Leave it idling for 5 minutes, then give it a hard rev - if you get lots of smoke it is likely to be the turbo - how many miles has the turbo done?

Check for oil in the inlet pipework, this is ususally a good sign. This was the case for the Metro Turbo. I don't know about the Audi.
