    1.8T Wiring Help (POS Pinouts)

    Hi Guys,

Just making sure I have everything correct before I commit to finishing my 1.8T conversion loom. Looking at URS4boy`s excellent guide the pinouts for the brown 4 pin POS connector (N122) are as follows:-

    1 - Cyl 3
    2 - POS ground
    3 - Cyl 2
    4 - Cyl 1

But looking at the ABY motronic manual and the Motronic pinout guide on S2 central I get...

    1 - Motronic connector 23 (S2Central says this pin is Cyl 1)
    2 - POS Ground
    3 - Motronic connector 2 (S2Central says this pin is Cyl 2)
4- Motronic connector 1 (S2Central says this pin is Cyl 3)

So the 2 sources give Cyl 1 & 3 in reverse. Which is correct? I know that the conversion guide is for the URS4, but is the S2 the same?

My Wire Colours into the 4 pin POS connectors are as follows (which is different from the guide)

    N122 (Brown)
    1- Black/Blue
    2 - Brown/Red
    3 - Purple
    4 - Green/White

    N127 (Black)
    1 - Not wired
    2- Brown/Red
    3- Green
    4 - Black/Red

So do I trust the guide, or do I need to swap Cyl 1 & 3?

    Cheers

    Ed

First of all, good on you for doing the 1.8t conversion on your own. Its pretty easy if you have any wiring skills at all. Try to be as neat as possible so the wiring loom is fairly compact. (You might want to bundle wires using zap-straps).

But on the question at hand:

First of all, I cannot guarantee that an ABY is different that an AAN. However, Corey has been selling 034 1.8t conversion kits and harnesses that were built for AANs to ABY owners for some time now. Since nobody has complained about misfiring from the get-go, I assume that, deep down the ABY wiring is the same as the AAN (even if wire colours are different). Also you should note that the Bentley (my guide at the time) has errors in it, of the type you mention (cylinders swapped on paper that are not that way in reality). That confused the h*LL out of me for awhile when I was developing the conversion.

What you need to do is check the wiring from the POSs to the cylinders. On my AAN the leads to the coils from the POS were labeled (1,2,...5). If not you can trace the wires back from the coils to the three pin end of the POSs (two pin on one POS). Then you need to realise (I had the benefit of an X-ray view of a POS to help me with this) that Pin 2 (the ground on the 4 pin side of the POS) is connected to an internal "bus bar" that provides the ground to all three POS channels. The next thing to realise is the transistors/chips inside are flow through, i.e. the one on the left outputs on the left, straight through, the one on the right out puts on the right. See for yourself by going to this webpage:

(NOTE: where the poster says "This x-ray of the POS doesn't really show us anything" I was like, "NO! It shows EVERYTHING", then the photo below that where the opened up the POS to show the wires outputting from the transistors/chips to the three pin side of the POS confirmed the rest.)

Once you are confident of the input and output wiring to the OE POS, then you can ignore my guide if its confusing because you can now follow the input wires through your POSs to the cylinder in question. The only thing left is to wire the Volvo four pin connectors accordingly.

Hope this helps. If not, ask away and I will attempt to answer your question(s).

Great, I was hoping the POS units were simply in one side out the other... That makes things a bit easier to follow through and double check.

I am sure the diagram you have in your guide is correct and its simply the motronic manual at fault.

          Cheers

I hope (and presume) that I am correct. Nevertheless, check the "Flow through" wiring as per the X-ray of the POS to confirm that I am correct. Good luck. It will all go smoothly.

Looks like the audi manual is incorrect. Checked the current wiring, and Daves conversion does match up with my car.

Taking the OEM coil cover off again today was the final straw for the oem wiring which has now developed serveral shorts. Pulled the sleeving off and all the insulation has cracked in several places.... looks like I am replacing the coils at just the right time!

Well that's good to know on both counts. Remember that the 1.8t conversion is NOT an upgrade. Its a cost effective replacement that is good up to about 370 hp with minimal tracking (heat is still the killer of the 115 "X" coil packs (although the 115R's seem to be a bit more heat resistant). The upgrade is the 034 high output coils. If I could figure out what the original application of those coils was, I would build another conversion around them.

I am also a OE coil pack supporter - As long as they are working. If you read (or have read) my 1.8t coil pack conversion instructions, the back story was I wanted to develop an alternative to the OE coil packs (and POSs) in case, at some point, the OE system was no longer being made. The 1.8t coil packs are not an upgrade, just an alternative.

Having said that, the 034 high output coil system, using single coils with built-in POSs is an upgrade in the sense of higher firing voltage and getting the coils away from the heat. On that basis, I want to find out if my wiring diagram will work with those coils. I need to find out more information about the coils and, therefore, I would like to find out their original application. If you do know this, could you please post here OR send me a pm. (Thanks).

So, has anyone tried to fit 1.8T coils on ABY? I'm planing to do this in next two weeks.. wanna be sure that everything what's writen in the guide will also aply to ABY!
Another question. Could this be true that numbers of coils are changed from 06B905115L to 06B905115R?

As I noted in an earlier post, I believe quite a few ABY people here have done the 1.8t coil pack conversion as a DIY. Still others have used the 034 or Apikol harnesses built for AANs on their ABYs (basically the same engine except for intake manifold differences). If you don't want to do an DIY, buy the Apikol kit that comes with 5 prepped 115R coils. If you want to do the DIY, follow this link to the up-dated DIY instructions (some new part no.s for connectors):

                            http://forums.audiworld.com/s4s6/msgs/195907.phtml

And yes, the 115Rs supercede the 115Ls.

                            Good luck.
