Ways to protect the MAF on tuned S2/RS2

For some people that dont want to go to aftermarket ECU that enable to lose the MAF i have discovered that the MAF is in more danger than the OEM cars that havent been tampered with.

    my setup is like this:

Although the MAF is on the original position,it seems that the heat generated from the whole area is very intence and so this in addition to the fact that the maf is very near the turbo,i think may have something to do with MAFs getting destroyed much sooner.

My thought is to remove the RS2 airbox cap only, move the maf furhter back, get some 80mm samco hose 180degree curve as well and a KN filter cone, and use the base of the airbox to fit everything inside. Then build a cap with heat protection to cover both the filter cone as well as the MAF.

Do you think this would be a better solution?

    any other suggestions???

I know the RS2 airbox is very very good, but i must do something about the heat and turbulance destroying my maf...

You live quite in hot country. Fairy tales tell, that motronic ecu is giving too high voltage for MAF power supply with the age. You can try to measure it while MAF is connected. If there is more than 5.1 volt - you need to lower it. Its possibe to think some heath shrouding and passive cooling - attach it to the metalic part (which serves as a heat sink BTW).

My MAF failed from OK to completely dead in hot summer day while standing in the traffic. It was only +29C outside, stock otherwise.

That thing is called zener diode or something. I cannot prove my statements regarding this, because I'm not so strong in analog electronics.

The thing I can prove, that MAF is becoming really hot when switched on. That's why it is somewhat rotated on my coupe (photo from some step in the project):

Plastic part is not afraid of the heat, and the heatsink receives some fresh air from the headlamp and body edge. It is not so cooler, however you cannot burn your hand from MAF after ride, like it is in my 220v .

It will require some modifications. Maybe manfuacturing some sort of adapter?

Sorry to interupt, but a question for Sau. Why is your Bosch throttle bypass valve (DV) connected to your engine breather? Just curious.

            Whats that about then?
Is it to stop air going back in to the PVC system when coming on boost? That would only make sense if it was plumbed in to the pressure side of the turbo.

my first attempt will be to make a small heat shield to cover the maf as it sits in it's original position.
If that doesnt work, then i will try to make a different cap for the rs2 airbox to be able to accept the MAF and a filter cone.

Be interesting to hear your results with trying that setup.

Everybody asks this , even seeing car live. Seems that it's #2 question after seeing WG cap nipple . It just optical ilusion. Actualy one of the hoses go to the intake rubboer boot. I have only one hole i it, that's why breather and DV output come to one place, then to the intake.

ok.what i did today was wrap in aluminium adhesive thermotec paper the shield of the RS2 airbox, some parts that were not covered in any shield and the MAF itself.

I figure that since the MAF sensor already heats up and inlet air cools it off to produce the effects needed it wouldnt be a problem to mask outside the maf with this paper so as to reduce the heat drawn to the sensor itself from the turbocharger and the EM in the area.the only problem is that the temperature now in greece is colder so i dont know if i can see any effects.
i do have a temp laser gun i can try and post the results

I did something like that with some left over heat shield stuff a while back, not as neat as yours though and didn't glue it to the maf body , just cut a hole over the connector block and looped it round that, seems to help reduce the heat a wee bit , probably be better with the more rigid heat shield, which is a bit easier to shape around the body of the maf.

if what i did doesnt have any results, then the next step is to move the maf away from the turbo as well.this also helps

Some pre and post heat shielding results would be very interesting and long term for everything, not just the MAF.

I am currently running without the rear air deflector on the back of the headlight as it was left at the rolling road recently. I noticed when driving with VAG-COM data logging that my air temps were over 50 in normal traffic as I am obviously taking in air from the engine bay. When I booted it in a 70MPH limit, the air temp came down to 40 degrees.

This got me thinking about shielding the induction system to see the results in VAG-COM, but where does VAG-COM take the air temp reading from? If from the MAF, then I will not be able to test the results of heatshielding around the plastic boost pipe etc.

                            Cheers n

i think vagcom reads the temp from the intake manifold IAT
