    Oil fumes in cabin

Over the past week or so I have noticed oil vapour smells getting in the cabin on my ABY Coupe. It happens typically after a long run - say doing 70-80 on a section of m-way or whatever then you come off at a junction and stop at the lights - it reeks of oil fumes.

Had a quick look this morning in the engine bay and nothing is obviously visibly wrong that its venting so much vapour to see any residue.

All a bit strange - anybody else had this ?

The PCV plumbing is due a refresh but I can't see how the fumes are getting into the car.

Oh and I'm getting intermiitent rear light bulb warnings this week - obviously one of my clusters is transforming into a swimming pool. Just great

Bit of the same problem with mine though it doesn't smell very much contrary to Paul's description. Also, I can only smell it if one of the windows or sunroof is open, as if keeping the cabin mostly airtight keeps the smell outside... though come to think of it, it does smell stronger when stopping from highway speeds.

Been suspecting the PCV system too but no noticeable leaks.

It's been happening for a few months on & off and like Paul, can't see anything in the engine bay that's faulty and car runs great may it be the commute to work with no hard accelerations or on a hard lap of the Nürburgring.

Could it be the bulk head seal under the bonnet. The one which separates the vent in/fuse board, wiper motor from the engine bay. i never fastened mine correctly once and i had the same symptoms

I have open breathers and this causes fumes to get into the car. if your system is leaking or breathing openly, then this would probably explain the fumes.

I wonder if you maybe have a drip of oil onto the exhaust somewhere? Thing is on the Mway you're not on boost so shouldn't breathe too much..
But yes, when I had the catch tank on I could really smell the fumes. And if either of the pipes from the C-case are split you'll be fuming on boost and sucking in unmetered air when off the throttle.

That might be it actually... Will have to check for small cracks then.
Anyway, came into work this morning but kept windows and sunroof closed and it there wasn't the slightest trace of fumes in the cabin so it can't be too urgent !

Will just wait for the Samco batch to arrive and I suspect Paul will be wanting create this kit real fast :mischeif:

                    PCV = Positive Crankcase Ventilation.

All S2's PCV systems are made up of a variety of hoses and a PCV valve and they're all getting old and they're really expensive to replace if you buy OEM parts from Audi so
there's a group buy on another thread of Paul's.
Normally PCV systems are very simple and utterly reliable but due to the nature and the stresses of our turbo engines, and with age obviously, ours are prone to fail...

Now thats a bit of lateral thinking - like it - I'll check that as I may have dislodged that bonnet seal recently. Of course the root of the problem is oil getting onto somewhere hot in the furst place - I do have some lil leaks round the cam case. Maybe thats it cos there isn't any sign of vapour loss from the PCV system.

Places to check for oil fumes if running a recirculating system (i.e. not vented to atmosphere)

                          1) breather pipe at the back of the rocker cover on an ABY or AAN
                          2) breather pipe at the bottom of the system where it joins to the block
                          3) rocker cover gasket
                          4) oil filler cap
                          5) and this is the best one as it took me bloody ages to find but a faulty o ring seal on the dip stick tube where it goes into the block.

I had the same problem. It turned out to be the oil pressure switch was nackered & was leaking oil down the block onto the exhaust. changed it and the problem has gone but I cant get all the oil off the exhaust, I have degreased but there is still some there. Any tips

In my case it was head cover gasket. Slowly dripping some oil on the downpipe and ex. manifold (behind the heatshield). When the crack in the gasket opened (cracked gasket tends to shrink, as it is like plastic) - it was smoke machine under the bonnet .
