    ticking noise......???

    Hi all,

Just opened the bonnet to have a listen once parked (car warm) there's quite a fast ticking noise coming from the engine bay? Almost liek a solenoid switch or something. Nearish the injectors etc. Can't really pinpoint it.

    Any ideas??

i thought this but not knowing much about cars and only having new cars for some time i seem to be listening out for things (

So I presume they should make this ticking then?

Sounds like little regulator valves from the charcoal canister, they click away some times at idle.

if you get a big screw driver and put the sharp end against the engine/injector/whatever/ and the blunt end pressed against your ear - you will be able to locate to within an inch - where the tapping is coming from.

You might be hearing the hydraulic lifters?

I find my engine gets a bit noisier when the oil level drops down towards the minimum mark - try topping it up to the max level and see if that makes a difference.

Dan I have a ticking noise on my s6, found out its asmall leak on the EM. It go's away when the engine is hot.
Also as Error404 says if you are a little low on oil the tappets will tick at times

If the ticking is getting faster and faster I would stand back and call the bomb squad.

                        Reviving this old thread,
Just recently replaced the cylinder head, new cams everything stock and now I hear ticking noise only when warm coming from the engine.

I'll do the screwdriver trick, but I'm wondering if it's worth while doing an engine flush. Has anyone ever used or done one and which product did you use?

I bet it's the blue solenoid for the carbon canister.

That's unplugged. After reading this here I unplugged it to make sure. Looks like we have a lifter that's sticking unfortunately.
