I bought a large element and had the ends custom made (by ES tuning in Norway)

intercooler - turbo pipe diameter?
I just bought a large intercooler 600mm x 30mm x 98mm (hand made ends). What diameter should the ends of the intercooler have? What are you guys using? I am fitting a kkk26/27/29 turbo, should i use the same diameter of the turbo exit for the pipes from turbo to intercoler to intake manifold or larger?Comment

Nick, im trying to work this out myself, my outlets are 3" (76mm), so dont know wether to use a 54mm-76mm reducing elbow on turbo outlet and use 76mm pipe throughout, or stick with stock 54mm as much as possible:wacked:
marco, what do you think, will it make much difference, i realise using larger pipe may increase lag
im certainly not an expert on flow rates etc

My intercooler will have 2.5" on both ends, simply because that was what is was fitted with, when it initially was built for a GMC Syclone
. For the outlet I´ll be able to use the standard hose. The inlet will have to have a reducing hose.. from 63mm to fit the turbo outlet with 54mm.
Now getting help with the alu welding so that the size can be reduced from 700x410x50mm to 700x270x50. Otherwise it would´nt fit behind the RS2 bumper.

Sorry Martin, I didn't see your post till now.
As you sayd if you increase too much pipe diameter you will increase lag but while you increase the diameter you are also slowing down flow thus reducing more than proportionally any iner drag and/or turbulance caused by connections and sharp bends.
Of course if you have the straightest ducting as possible and least pipe junktions and bends, losses with using a fairly small duct could be not so evident.
Anyway I would never run ducting ID bigger than throttle valve effective flow section.
