    UrS6 FMIC solutions

Ok. I am now thinking that I sould be thinking about cooling my intake side and realise that a side mount IC just doesn't cut the mustard.
The mounting design of the UsS4/6 IC is terrible as it is mounted at an angle on the offside of the car. This wouldn't be too bad, but what makes it worse is that there is no flow of air, as such, through the IC as directly behind it sits the inner wheel arch plastic cover.
I'm now thinking a FMIC is the best solution. Having never tackled anything like this before I have a few questions.

    1. Would it be the best idea to retain the existing IC AND fit a FMIC to optimise cooling?

    2. Believe it or not, space is limited on the UrS4/6 to fit a FMIC without major bumper mods so the usual BIG square style IC wouldn't be suitable. Is there such a thing as a long rectangular IC which could be fitted in the postition as shown below (behind the bottom grille)?

You could look to use two sierra cosworth intercoolers welded together to go across the front of the car. I think Jogi did something along those lines a while back

I've seen that done before using 4x4 cosworth one's which makes for good results, if you look thru the thread for putting a 3b into a coupe quattro thats recently been on here there is pictures of jogi's ic joined together.

Ok, now that I reckon I've got a boost leak, this is when I should be considering the upgrade to a FMIC.
I have found these two commercial products (I think they are the same) but a rather pricey.

                034
                and
                Apikol

I really can't afford that much, plus, I think they are designed for US spec with bigger bumpers.

Other possibilities are the custom jobbies which are all well and good when you have a workshop/garage to do some fabrication, but I haven't.

                Such as this, and this.

It seems that 22x9x3.5 is the biggest I can go with an intercooler, was looking at the Cosworth intercoolers mentioned before but even they are too thick to fit behind my bumper.

A chargecooler could be an option but they are more complicated than the FMIC to fit I reckon and by all acounts, less effective.

Would anyone like to volunteer taking on this little project with me as I'm sure that I need it, especially when it comes to the workshop/equipment/fabrication.

Oh yeh, what pipe diameter do I need for the inlet and outlet on the IC?

The stock intercooler isn't as bad as you might imagine IF, and I stress the IF, you run the belly pan. The belly pan helps to seal the ducting to the OE intercooler so it can get some air.

To release some of that air, I devised a wheel well liner mod based on the B5 S4 wheel well vent (for their intercoolers). Its at S-cars.org:

                          http://www.s-cars.org/postnuke/modul...rticle&sid=154

I ran that way until I RS2'd the engine (AAN). Then I installed an FMIC based on a Taiwanese core and brackets much the same as those shown in the Audifans.net article (which I had no problems linking to, despite not being logged in there). Ended up looking much the same as the Audifans.net one, except thicker core because I have the FUGLY North American bumpers.

However, once I saw the Apikol FMIC, I was smitten. Bought it and sold my old one to a local club member. (Who by luck, won an Apikol FMIC at an S-cars fest in September, and now has since sold my original FMIC on as well).

The latest 034 FMIC kit is the Apikol kit (much better quality and same price as what they were selling before, no contest).
