    Oil Pump - Exploded.

While I’ve got the oil pump off of my '91 3B engine, I thought I’d share these pictures of it with the forum. I hope they may be of use to someone.

Here are the oil pump components.

You can see where the timing belt relay roller fits (at the top), also the crank front seal (centre) and the oil pick-up pipe (bottom).

    Gears in place.

Typical wear on the drive dogs.

    Oil temperature gauge sender.

    Sender operating range. 180°C.

All assembled. Complete with the oil pump drive which is normally fitted to the crank.

    Stu,
I know you've done a pukka job tidying up and respraying everything under the bonnet, but isn't this taking things a bit far?
    Cheers

The wear on the drive dogs caused a knocking noise in my engine, get a new one!
The part is hardened, when it wears through the hardening its soon knackered!

Thanks for posting those. Only last week, I was wondering how the oil pump was driven. Now I know: directly off the crank.

dont forget to put a realy good oil in to the pump before fiting, or els you might have problem during startup with the pumt not sucking up oil from the sump.

Best thing is to put some stp oil treatment in then you will not have any problem att all.

So I was right in thinking the pictures would help.

I'm considering chucking this pump back in, if it ain't broke and all that.
I was a little concerned with the wear on the drive dogs, but I've got another pump with 2/3rds the mileage and that's pretty much the same. I wouldn't mind getting my hands on a new oil pump to check that for play/backlash. It is a shame as the rest of the pump is spot on.
As you can see I've got a new drive for the crank anyway, as that will be a lot more difficult to change once the engine's back in the car, compared to the oil pump.

That's a good point Zlobo. I imagine this pump is good at pumping oil, but not so efficient at pumping air.

I think the old black oil temperature sender has been the most rewarding thing I've cleaned so far.

...and how do you get things sooooo clean, must go through a lot of toothbrushes?

I have read in the norwegian Audi forum that some people "chim" the oil pump, does anybody here know anything about how and why this should be done?

to get higer oil pressure they put some shims between the spring and the oil temp sender. i noticed it o n one engine i dismounted.
