    AAN 20VT into type85 CQ

Hey guys, I'm planning on starting a project soon, but I have a couple of things I want to get straight before starting. I know this is an S2 forum and all, but hey its a 20VT project, so here goes:

I own a 85 coupé quattro type85, currently with the stock 2.2 5cyl KV engine (136 hp) and would like to swap that one out for an AAN S4 engine which I picked up yesterday. I have some friends who happen to be pretty competent mechanics helping me out so the installation shouldn't be that much of a problem. Just some things I want to clear up before starting.

    - Battery. Does it need to be relocated to the rear/boot of the car, for extra clearance of the wastegate etc. Like with a 10VT swap?

    - Gearbox. From what I read, can be used and can handle the increased power with ease?

    - Oil cooler. Any suggestions on where to place it? Does it HAVE to be in driving wind?

    - Intercooler. I have a stock RS4 aluminium intercooler, should be sufficient I think? Placing will need some modifying I think when looking at the air intake of the AAN. A front mount won't be possible with this one I think.

    - Airbox/filter. Can I use the stock AAN airbox, seems a bit large, any suggestions?

    - Braking. If I understand correctly the S4 uses vacuum-assisted braking whilst the type85 does not? How to convert it to work properly?

    - Motormounts. Direct fit?

    - Exhaust. Downpipe can be made fit to by the looks of it, but is the diameter of the stock exhaust system sufficient, or is it too restrictive?

    - Any other (mechanical) modifications I haven't thought of?

Sorry for the load of questions, any help would be appreciated. Merry Christmas to you all.

best to move the battery out of the way for starters, gearbox should be fine in handling the power,rs4 intercooler is not ideal but should be sufficient to start off with, ideally a larger/bigger cored intercooler would be better, you can use your standard brake servo although i think you will have clearance issues, using your original vacuum assisted servo will give you a harder pedal on boost, only noticeable if you left foot brake, biggest diameter exhaust will certainly help things,i think the downpipe may need slight modification but it wont be far off...good luck

I transplanted a 3B unit into my typ85 90q and the battery stayed in place. Without a doubt it would free up some space and also redistribute some weight, but it is not essential IMHO.
The gearbox can handle the power. All depends on what turbo you use, the short gears can be a pain and you cannot achieve 60mph in 2nd, so this will slow down your 0-60 times if that is important.
I found the OE mounts were not up to the job so replaced them with 034 items.
If you do a search on this forum you will find more info and pics that might help. Other than that, look at motorgeek.com. THis conversion is covered quite comprehensively there.
      Good luck. HTH.

I have done this conversion in person, so I will go into bit more details:

As everyone has said, it's nice to move battery, but it's not necessary with AAN. Best place for it is in the place where urq battery sits, but you need to cut and weld to do this. I have moved it to the trunk, and it's not the best place for weight distribution, but it's easier .

Power is OK, ratios are not. It is a little too short, and personally I feel a bit of "hole" between 3rd and 4th. Beware. Better thing is to use gearbox from audi 200 turbo quattro. However there are some issues (something with speedo and gearbox linkage), but I don't know exactly what they are, but they are 100% solveable, linelis has done this .

Rigid hoses will force you to put in into the fender. And yes it has to be in driving wind, especially if driven hard. I have cut part of plastic thing (mud guard) which covers fender from inside to give it more air.

It's quite PITA to use stock hoses. Actually I have found use only for TB hose.

A bit? It's very large . I have used only heat shield and antiswirl part from orginal airbox.

You mixed things up. S4 uses hydraulic assisted braking, whilst cq - vacuum. Just connect brake servo through one way valve and it will be fine. If you want to use LFB, then just add additional vacuum reservoir after this one way valve.

Not exactly. It is recommended to use one alloy engine "leg" from KV. If I remember correctly - passengers side.

S4 downpipe needs to be cut where heat shield starts, and new tube needs to be welded. I have two exausts - one is stock cq, other is "race" 60mm. It drives ok with stock, however stock one is restrictive. It not only robs power from engine, but also rises temperature of exaust manifold, turbo and oil. Not recomended for chipped and abused 20vt.

Radiator needs to be mounted on custom lower mount, and needs to be positioned at angle. Also radiator fan needs to go "deeper" into radiator (just use long nuts for this).

Intercooler and boost hoses plumbing and routing is an issue. It's was actualy the hardest part for me.

Throttle cable also needs to be shortened a bit, or just wound on throttle body few times (remember to adjust it to have full throttle)

I would certainley move the battery,i am doing nearly the same conversion as you now.
One thing you need to sort out is what flywheel and clutch you are going to use as the AAN items are useless when mated up with the 016 box.You also need to press a needle bearing into the end of the AAN crank as the input shaft goes all the way through the flywheel,i will try and take some photos of this in the next couple of days. You need a Audi 200 3B flywheel(not S2 as they are different),i have been reliabley informed that the flywheel from a 1b/MC/RR are all good to use. There is room at the front of the engine for a intercooler, not much but sal on here has recently done the same and is getting 430bhp,i cant find a good picture of it but heres his engine. There is a interccoler behind the grill.(Click to make bigger)

this thread would be a good one to read all the way through.

well folks.... after my episode with the 86 zermatt car from NC with the paint issues and whatnot, and then my issue with not being able to stop for blazers in front of me, i decided to console myself with buying the car i originally wanted before going to NC.... a very clean, very nice 4kq, a...

Thanks for the answers guys.. will be back shortly with a lot more though! kwlw, do you have your own thread describing your conversion?

Spink, what kind of IM is in that picture? Different from my AAN one as it has the intake located more in the middle

What is the benefit of the wagner IM? Even shorter intake trajectory than the AAN IM?

The line the AAN up with my stock gearbox, I would need what?
                  - 200 20V flywheel
                  - 200 20V clutch?
                  - needle bearing from the 200 20V?

I'll be collecting parts the coming months as we probably won't start this project untill next spring. It's easiest to have everything lying around prior to starting.

Question off the side, what spark plugs do you recommend for the AAN, as the ones currently in it are a bit corroded.

It all depends on what sort of power you want to push out?
The AAN is fine up to around 400ish bhp but is a bit of a restriction after that as design does not distribute the air evenly between cylinders IIRC.

The main goal is to get everything running stock without any problems, after that I'de like to go to about 300 bhp. But who knows, you can never have enough power..

I have a night shift today so I'll catch up on my reading on here, a lot of things I want to do have already been discussed here

It's not necessary to use explicitly 20v items, you just need to use audi 100/200 turbo 88-91 items (20v fits in that category). Keywords regarding flywheel are "flat, with timing pin on the back" . Needle bearing is cheap and comon in auto shops.

Be careful which needle bearing you buy as when i put a UR RR 20v engine into a 1986 A100 the needle bearing had to be removed and a larger one fitted.I would get one from the same year KV coupe as you have already.I havnt got et*a at the moment but i wrote this part number down a few weeks ago which i reckon is the one you need.046 105 313 D

Strange expierence. I have done few changes of this bearing, and never spotted anything wrong with it. Like I go to the bearings shop (SKF), ask for bearing for 86 audi 90 quattro, and they give me correct one . It quite strange, that urq had different one. But it does have as also bunch of newer audis have. Maybe gearbox main shaft tips are different in diameter? If it is 18mm, you need older bearing (like it is below), if it's 15mm, you need newer one.

You can also use this bearing code/measurements for local bearings shop C18X24X16.

yes im not sure but the later torsen 016 must have a smaller tip,i doubt the 90 and the 100 of the same year would have a different size?

As for the bearing i will try a shop near to me,they are dirt cheap also.Think from audi its about £20.cheers
