    Twin Intercoolers thoughts?

Toying with the idea of seeing if i can find a small intercooler to sit above the original S2 item to see if i can control the intake air temps slightly better with a homefry.

I was thinking about one with an entry and exit on the same side so in effect i could insert it between the exit of the x-member and the metal pipe along the rocker.

Had a quick look on fleabay and you can pickup i/c's for pocket change so that with some samco angled pipes and it should be easy enough to setup and see.

Keen to see other people's thoughts on any potential gains...btw i expect there to be a small increase in lag given the extra trip the intake charge is going to have to take.

    Cheers
    David

P.S. RS2 intercoolers etc are off the list...budget just won't allow for now...

Might be a waste of time on a homefries as I found out when I fitted the RS2 IC and got minimal gains but you never know... also requires a fairly major mod to the XM to get the pipe out. Be interesting though, especially as an option for those running high boost RS2 items or larger.

Yeah Andy actually that was the reason for the request as you said you only have very minimal gains from the rs2 setup.

Wasn't going to tinker with the x-member pipework at all, just rather than the straight flexi pipe that is ther currently from the i/c exit to the rocker pipe, just plug in the 2nd IC there, with both exits on the same side (left as you look at the front of the car) then it feels like it could be a 'plug and play' solution for little £££

Why not remove the AUX rad an place a small intercooler instead. That has exis in both ends. Then you could go from the normal IC up to the aux ic and then from the aux ic to throttle body and bypass the Xmember.

          Cheers

Well I think the RS2 IC is a good bit of kit. The 'problem' with homefried ABYs is that I retained the oddball factory behaviour on the temperature compensation maps such that it tries to level out performance regardless of IAT (within safety limits of course).

I have never bothered to change this for anyone, but I could if required to do so - this would allow for constant boost pressure regardless of IAT so that you would actually get MORE air into the engine when it is colder - instead of the ECU thinking along the lines of 'the air is so cold that I must inhale less of it so as not to scare the driver'.... Audi did this originally to provide consistent performance regardless of IAT.

This does NOT apply to 3B or RS2 ECUs - its an anomolie only on the ABY and AAN as far as I can ascertain.

@Andy - I can cook something up for you to try if you like, but it may not be easy to quantify on the old butt dyno.

I guess what would have been nice to see 1st is a plot of IAT with S2 IC across the max boost profile at ambient of say 20 celsius then do exactly the same with RS2 IC to see what improvement was apparent at the IAT sensor... Be really nice to know that. The current ECU software is masking the gains I think.

If you can wait for a while it might be best as I have an RS2 IC here waiting to go on - when I can be assed with brackets and such - so I'll collect some data on my S2 IC first of all. That we can more correctly quantify the gains from the RS2 IC.

@Dave - I would just go straight for the RS2 IC - confident you'll see some benefit right away - much easier than faffing with twintercoolers on our cars methinks.

Yeah I have no aux rad so hence wanting to see if i could make use of the space, the pumbling route you're suggesting might be better though

So there is no compensation map on the 3B (which is what i have...)

I would go straight for an Rs2 I/C if i had the budget which I don't, hence the nature of the thread was what i can do with el cheapo bits from the bay etc.

There is no temperature compensation map for boost on the 3B.

Well the ABY cooler is slightly bigger than 3B - if you can pickup one of those cheap it might give you something. But better to save the pennies for RS2 IC rather than sourcing random bits on eBay and the likes.

I'd be tempted to find an IC that was the same size as the aux rad (or close enough) and fit that instead of the XM pipe. Turning the air through a tortuous path a few times more would be pointless IMHO.

Something like this might fit although I think this might have to be acustom job. 2wd Cossie IC is a good bet too as they're long and short but quite wide. Much cheapness too as everyone wants 4wd / RS500 ICs so these go for peanuts, not sure about the plumbing though over by the alternator.

Best option is a custom IC that fits the aux. rad mounts and has all the correct joints in place for using standard S2 / RS2 IC. Be an interesting group buy alternative to an RS2 IC and XM, easier to source parts and many have ditched the aux. rad as it's £180 new and the old one is knackered.

@Paul, an uprated Homefries for cars with RS2 IC and SS zorst is an interesting idea, let me know how you get on wih yours unless you're ever over Bristol way and want to play on some rollers.

I know that really I need a custom map to get the most out of my car but there's such little gains to be had on the k24 now that I really think it would be a waste of effort and money. And it's running pretty sweet at present so much better to wait for new turbo time! :mischeif: /
