    S2v'sRS2 MAF

    hello,

been lurking here a few months now since i bought an (ABY) S2 late last year. I've been experiencing one particular problem since purchase-serious bucking under full throttle, and sometimes feels a little hesitant when accelerating.

I've gotten the 2413 blink code fault repeatedly and sometimes 2341. checked for obvious boost leaks and replaced the fuel filter (lovely job-discovered the filter was prob the original!)

I got a loan of a good MAF and swapped it into my car. Night and day much more power, much smoother thru' the rev band and slightly better fuel ecomomy (even considering the welly i've been giving it since it is now running better)-no more bucking, no blink codes for 250miles

So, i'm thinking my MAF has had it. With S2 and RS2 MAFS of similar price am i as well getting the RS2 MAF? I have no plans for further upgrades, and its completely standard at the mo', but who knows what may happen

    cheers

Similar prices? I thought that the RS2 MAF was considerably more expensive?? Anyway, you'll need to fit an RS2 airbox or mod your S2 one for it to run right with the bigger RS2, I would imagine.

I thought they were the same, bar the differing mesh arrangement?

          Its all here: http://www.s2forum.com/forum/showthr...hlight=Rs2+maf

They are virtually identical bar a differing "Mesh" arrangement. Straight swap by all accounts. Buy the cheapest one....

            STOP

Try cleaning your MAF first using Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA). This sorts MAF problems out most of the time.

            There are 2 known methods:

            1. Get a large container, fill with IPA, slosh the MAF around a bit (gently) and leave to soak overnight. Refit.

            2. If you can't get hold of IPA. Buy a spray can of brake and carb cleaner, change the nozzle for a spray nozzle (low pressure fine mist type) from some furniture polish, deoderant etc. Remove gauze screens, place in a bowl and spray all over the MAF internals. Watch crap come of the MAF internals. Refit screens and refit MAF.

I used option 2 and it worked like a dream.

***Also clean up the contacts on the MAF plug and socket.***

I think you'll be suprised at the increase in performance and the increase in MPG!!

Also take a look at S2central.net paul did a bit of work to check to see if the MAF is knackered. It may be the connector contacts are corroded.

contacts are good, but i plan on doing some of the electrical tests on s2central before purchase.

as for cleaning, i really think thats just puting off the inevitable........short term fix for a goosed MAF and susequent cleaning required to maintain performance

my understanding was that the 2 MAF's were identical in physical dimensions, only differing in the mesh. I guess my question is

are the electrical outputs from the 2 MAFs the same

can the rest of the fuelling system (ecu/injectors) cope with the (minor) increase in airflow?

are there any other factors to consider?

Go for an RS2 MAF, seeing as they are slightly cheaper.

Probably not, they may seem clean but will cause voltage/resistance errors and mess up your MAF readings. A few of us on here are having issues with this and are currently looking into solutions.

Maybe not. The MAF may just be dirty, it happens! Could be a permanent fix, and a chea one at that. I thought my MAF was dead but a clean solved all problems.

For the sake of a couple of dollars? It's a no brainer.

Forget the dirty MAF nonsense - I'll bet its out of calibration (unless its connector is real bad).

A new RS2 MAF is surprisingly cheap from a Bosch specialist that takes your old unit as core exchange (but they might be funny swapping an S2 MAF for an RS2 one if they spot the different part number).

DOn't sweat this for a second - they are electrically the same. RS2 MAF is less restrictive so the tiny amount of extra air will easily be covered by the ECU automatically - whether with factory chips or something more spicy

I can confirm the rs2 MAF fits the aby airbox perfectly

The only difference between the 2 MAF's are the length of the body and the mesh.
Neither of these are an issue
