Converting CQ10v to S2 ABY using Avant

Car looks good, I've seen it parked outside work a few times at lunch. Al's car was a beaut, I was jealous of how original it all was, shame it met a bitter end at the hand of an out-of-control woman...

There are many changes that were made to the S2 over the CQ, most are detailed on here but I suppose it's down to how much work you want to take on Azman has done this conversion with a 3B so would be a good man to speak to, as would Alex at All Audi as he knows an awful lot about these cars, has concerted a B3 90q and is local too (Bristol).

I would suggest that you go for a 3B flywheel as the ABY item is a bit heavy (!) and defo go down the 996 monoblock route for brakes as the G60s really aren't up to stopping in a hurry! 6 speed box, 5 stud hubs and larger S2 front struts are a good plan too IMHO.

Yeah i know Aaron (azman) from a while back, he told me i can give him a ring if i get stuck.

I have everything from both cars so will just do the best i can, i have a fairly methodical approach (im labelling lots) so i should get there eventually.

The 6 speed box and engine will be going in, the 4 stud hubs and g60s are staying for the time being (until i can afford better).

I will give you a shout when your around mate, cos it always alot quicker with an extra pair of hands.

You will be especially useful when trying to get it all running, having an aby yourself

Unfortunatly found today that a small chunk of a fitting flange has chipped off the cold side of the turbo in the accident so thats abit of a ******

Depending on your wheel choice there is a cost effective solution for the four stud brakes.

Its going really well mate, thanks for asking.
Ive had to buy a new subframe cos the donor cars one was bent, so that haltered progress a bit.
Engine bay and dash is sorted with wiring fuel lines etc. Just need to fit the turbo housing i am awaiting, then drop the engine and box in.
Then its just a case of connecting up driveshafts fitting 20v hubs and getting the downpipe and exhaust mated.
Job done.

Will try and get some pictures up soon.
Seeing the ABy intercooler behind the modified b3 coupe bumper is quite entertaining.

Well i made a fair bit of progress on the car over the bank holiday.

Engine, Box and New Subframe were wrestled in as one lump. All fits really nice.
Although i had to use my existing CQ engine mounts as the S2 ones are offset and its the chassis mounting points that are different not the engines.

Thanks to a few people for parts recently:
K7 ERG for the turbo housing, just the job.
Quattronics for the alloy front subframe mounts with 10mm CQ through holes.
Pro-Speed for doing a sterling job at converting my ABY 1->2 Downpipe into a single. (beautiful welding!)
AlS2avant for the Mikalor Hose Clamps.

Engine is all wired up. Im just waiting on a box of bits from VAGparts and i should have her fired up this weekend!

Ill take some pictures this weekend, i keep meaning to take some all the way through. but i get into it and forget!

great news! Sounds like you're almost there.
I'll be following this route with my CQ next year once the chassis, suspension and brakes are up to scratch, interested to hear about any problems you've had with teh fitting

What was the issue with the engine mounts? I thought all the IL5s shared the same mounts?
Have you used a custom downpipe to join up to your CQ exhaust, i assume you removed the y-section and have no cats?

Error 404:
Use the 20v CQ mounts they will work fine. The chassis mounts on an S2 are slightly different meaning they need an offset mount (the centre pin is not in line with the two mounting holes) All I5's have the same mounting points on the engine itself.
Exactly right on the exhaust, i have removed the Y and have no cats. 1989 so no need!

This should be engine number 5 yeah! (NG -> 2.5KV -> 2.2KV -> GTi 2.5KV and now ABY) We'll if you'd done it properly in the first place..... Nah only joking the 2.2KV was never going to stay in there long!
But you gotta admit it looks a lot better now from when you had it!!

ITS ALIVE!!!!!!!!

after numerous electrical problems the car now runs!!! sweet at that!!

I had a problem due to the 1995 avant being fitted with a factory immobilizer/alarm. which after religiously studying Paul N's electrics schematics for the RS2. transpired that i had to transfere the Central locking unit and loom from the avant. (thank god ive not scrapped the avant yet)

It still wouldnt turn over or give fuel after that but it just needed the +ive to the starter cleaning, it coughed ant spluttered to life. (with no exhaust.....hehe)

Im soooo happy, i was getting so very frustrated with it.

should be all together in a couple of weeks
