£45 from Audi for cam pulley.

Their stocks might be a bit low right now. The first replacement chewed the key off straight away (ummm oops, didn't drain the tappets ops: ) the second pulley I ordered went on no probs and timing is spot on now. (Replaced two of the tappets - they would not pump at all)

Drives ok up to 3-3.5k rpm - like you say, smooth, economical. Haven't tried it again (since the blowoff) after that, but will go for a proper drive in next few days, with my screwdrivers (and AA card) at the ready :S

Anyone have the part number for the clips that hold the timing belt cover tight in place? Mine's missing one and it rattles/taps the pas pump.

    Cheers Paul

Paul, got this off of ETKA:

      054 109 150 SPRING CLIP

Paul, Martyn or Ben could confirm, but I think its right.

Is the pas steering pump belt tight enough? you get a lot of movement in the belts if they are not tightened up correctly

        clips: 078 109 150 A (check first)

Well, there's not a lot of movement on the pas pump - i think there is some vibration from the blowy exhaust and the pas pump taps occasionally on the cover - it's not a big thing, but knowing it needs sorting out bugs me! I think the pas pump is tight enough. Tightened the timing belt as you described too Doug

Cheers guys (reminds me again to have a rummage for my etka disc...)

Good work Paul, glad you got the old shed running like it should. That cam looks like it would be fine. Doesnt look the part where the key sits is damaged. I got the same PN as Doug for that clip. Ignore Mark, hes old!!

Was I right about the torque setting then?

15nm for the studs, yeah. 65 (or 67, can't remember) for the cam pulley.

I think the pipe that blew off (and nearly killed a gaggle of blue rinsers stood near the car from fright with the hiss) is the same one you blew off, so gonna try Doug's hose rather than my lashed up effort. Will post a picture of mine when it comes off for you to have a laugh at.

Paul J, how did you know that the hydraulic tappets were no good?

Can faulty tappets stop the valves from opening/ closing?

                          @Mark & Doug,

Your both right. The 054 109 150 supercedes to the 078 109 150 A. Retail is a whopping 40 pence + VAT. Looks like your ETKA is a bit old Mark.

Regarding tappets after a camshaft install - there is a rather large warning in the manual that states you must NOT crank the engine for so many hours after a camshaft installation. I cannot remember how many hours stated (don't have the book in front o' me) - but it does mention that valve damage is *possible* if the tappets are not allowed to settle properly....

Yeah, it's 30 minutes you need to wait, something like that I think. It was something like 24-36 hours when mine got cranked (waiting for yet another cam pulley to come. Tell ya when that went on I was cacking 'em in case it broke again...)

When you pull the tappets out (one at a time, then put it back, then next one is best) and look inside, there's a metal round thing inside it which you can grip with your fingers and pump slightly in and out. The hole on the side of the tappet spews oil out - you'd be surprised at how much they hold. Two wouldn't pump, even with pliers gripping, so I binned em. Replacements are £8 plus vat from Andrew Pages and the same tappets are used on Mk 2 Golfs, nearly all audis, passats, etc etc etc.

Be interesting to know what the cost difference is between Audi selling the tappet and VW selling it. Probably have diff part numbers and when they get 'em out pick em from the same box, cheeky *****.
