As urS4boy says, the mfts is gauge and temp warning, back of the head is ecu temp feed.
I had to wire some new pins onto my loom from tps, you get four and i also got a new brown plastic pin housing for them.

Only thing im missing is the rubber cover for the mfts to prevent air flow cooling it and affecting the readings if it does at all?

It feeds the ECU on a 3b which is what Condor asked about.

I think the sensor has a washer on it?

I have used ptfe tape to seal one that was otherwise weeping.

On the 3B the ecu uses the temp sender on the back of the head for the enrichment control. The MFTS signal is used to reduce boost when the engine overheats. Classic symptoms of the MFTS going bad are either this reduced level of boost or the coolant temp alarm going off when the engine is cold. Temp guage will read low if the MFTS is open to the breeze in this kind of cold weather, it should be covered with a rubber boot.

If the change of switch doesn't do the trick, consider the thermostat, and the rubber sealing ring, check out on the forum which way round it is supposed to go and also what is the recommended rotation of the thermostat. Just mentioning this in case your thermostat has not been changed for a few years.

Also imho, use a MFTS and Thermostat from the dealer, as you only wanted to do the two jobs correctly and do it once.

One other thing that occurs to me is that it is a good idea to check that the wires leading up to the MFTS plug, then the plug itself and the metal 'pins' inside the plug, just make sure everything is working as it should. I found that due to ageing my MTFS plug was in good condition and was not hooking up reliable and consistently.

urS4 boy will have a link that will allow you to test the MFTS.

Also be careful of the delicate one bolt fixing water hose at the rear of the engine block if looking to change the temperature switch back there. The metal upgrade by Rusty is a good idea.

One last thing, as I'm pontificating, consider replacing the little white oil pressure switch down low on the side of the block under the MTFS.

          HTH.

          Kind regards.
