    Oil Leak (another one...)

I was just about to post 'oil leak' when I saw Ben's post hence the 'another one' bit. I've only got one, but it's annoying.

Front driver side corner, I'm betting the oil pipes round the turbo area - one of those.

I don't think a spacer was used on the turbo oil feed pipe, so odds are it's that one.

What are you bigger turbo guys using for oil pipes? The braided ones Audi use seem a bit crap and leaky to me, and they prices they charge for em... well, It might cost the same to get something stronger (ok, albeit it'll be in blue, or red, or some other bling colour) but what, and where from?

Gonna have to take the front end off anyway to properly sort the rubber hoses from turbo out (the turbo to intercooler one gets sprayed in hot oil at the moment.)

Time to get my hands mucky again. For years I worked on friends 'simple' cars - vauxhalls, fords, toyotas - whatever bangers they bought, they came to me for fixing. Now this thing comes along with pipes all over the shop and I'm having to relearn where things go, how things work again. Expensive learning curve so far

    PJ

I think it's part 034 145 745 D that's 'popped'. At first I thought it was a lower pipe that was spraying up. but more likely a higher pipe that's dripping down

Lower pipe is standard on mine - toms and gregs as well.

I bet old seals have been used and so not sealing.

Top hose should have a 10mm spacer in there - Tom and Greg have that - unless it has been bent - but likely to break if it has. Again I would check the gaskets.

If you want a custom hose, you have to cut the ends off the standard one and weld some JIC adapters on - then make up some hoses - search for speedflow hoses - I think I posted all the part numbers and pictures in a thread for Habib - this is expensive though.

      OK, mission partially accomplished.

With the help of a hose from Doug (cheers mate) the turbo to intercooler pipe has been sorted out. When the turbo hits 1.5 bar it stays there (and serves as a reminder of how bloody awful my brakes are. I stood on them going past my house whilst ... um... testing and the car squirmed and slithered before stopping about 5 houses past.... :S ) So, boost is ok. That's a total of 4 times the turbo has been used past 1 bar! Woot!

However, as seen on the following picture, there is NO oil feed pipe spacer on the top of the turbo. The oil leak appears to be coming from here, because even after replacing the gaskets on the upper and lower pipes, oil is still dripping out.

See exhibit 'a' to know what I'm on about:

And so we come to exhibit 'b'. I've cannabalised an old old feed pipe and chopped the flange off. Whilst it needs cleaning up and filing smooth on the other side, and a couple of gaskets, I hope it can be used to sort out the oil leak.

Which brings me to my question - where can I get a stud or bolt long enough (m10 size I think, if i remember right?) to go through the spacer and the oil feed pipe flange? I seem to have an extreme deficit of useful sized screws, bolts, washers, nuts etc. Halfords springs to mind, but they are pretty useless these days, unfortunately, unless you want some nice wheel trims that spin when your car stops moving.

Paul, do a search on yell.co.uk for 'fixings', you should get a few nut and bolt suppliers in your area. i think they are M6, i just used M6 bolts on my RS2 turbo.

Cheers for that mate - v.useful - will try a few of those places tommorrow.

Another problem I've got is the exhaust blowing - took it to an exhaust place today and they suggested taking off the middle section and getting it cut/a bigger flange put on. Bit disappointing spending £1600 on a new exhaust (and sports cat) and find it's blowing I'll ring Milltek to see what they suggest but after my last call to them, they didn't seem interested saying "it has all the fixings and fittings it needs on it."

Not really wanting to call QST either, but for other reasons.

I am fairly sure they are M6 threads Paul - and I get stuff - online from this place:

I use the metric socket screws(allen key drivers) in stainless - order a selection of lengths (better to have too many than too little) and stainless washers.

Test you don't have a bolt that is too long as I put 2 bolts on, to hold the one on the block - torqued them up - the hose felt tight - started the car and a litre of oil ****** out over the monoblock drive - women will not like that.

Make sure everything is very clean when you are putting it back together - and check the torque after it has been heat-cycled.

At least you are getting there now and holding some decent boost

Cheers Leigh - I'm *hoping* the oil leak will be cured, so if I'm about (will let you know - not sure what wife has planned) drop by and see the shed. By all means take it for a spin (again, if all is pronounced well - should know in next day or two) but bear in mind the brakes are carved from antique mahogany with wet cardboard for pads. Looking to get some prayer beads fitted too, for deliverance from the almighty for those times when the brakes are just too damn crap (and they were today, first time the car has been properly boosted, and I get a serious wake up call from the lack of brakes!)

Unfortunately, the 'car fund' has run out pretty much, so I'll have to settle for new pads and taking up religion to aid me with stopping :S for the next few months till I can scrape up some cash for Hi Specs or some of Corey's Porsche jobs. Would love Lee's insane 'mega brake' setup but that would take longer to save for, and I'd soon get fed up of the car into hedge/crash barrier maneuvers before I could get those I wonder if the wife will miss a few bedsheets. I'm thinking some kind of parachute setup...

Hi Paul, Glad to hear things are coming on with your car, albeit slowly!! £1600 for an exhuast?!! Bloody hell mate what is it made of, Titanium?!! I take it for that you got a full system with manifold?
On the subject of brakes, check out this advert I saw the other day:-

I was going to ring for myself but I'm skint at the moment. I don't know if they are still for sale but it's worth a phone call as they seem very cheap to me.

Cheers Andy but the wife would knacker me if I spent any more cash on the car right now You're right - they are cheap - someone will probably get a bargain

Had a crap day with the car today. The Turbo has an oil feed pipe on top of it... that leaks.. even with the makeshift spacer (so hoping Tom - Audiman - can source one).

Worse, I found out the bodges done on the car stretch to the oil pump. The oil feed pipe coming from the oil pump has an allen key bolt holding it in on one side... which appears to have been tightened so much it's completely rounded in the middle. On the other side, a self tapping screw from my crossmember (it's painted red) appears to have been used instead of the reqd threaded bolt. As a result, if that pipe is knackered, the whole pump will have to come off, and new threads cut for the bodged nuts, as the right size bolt/stud for that will no longer fit.

Anyone know how big a job an oil pump is to remove? Got fed up with the car today. Every time you think you're getting somewhere near, you find another complete mess to sort out.

I take it that oil leak (a drip, but it's constant when the oil pressure is up) definitely needs sorting before I can run the car reliably yeah, otherwise it'll be a dead turbo?

Ah well, managed to boost the car a total of twice at 1.5 bar, and it felt good (though hopefully will have more to come when this latest round of crap is sorted...)

                        Trying to keep the faith

Oh yeah, and the milltek system is downpipe, cat, cat back, around £1600 I paid including vat, which seems rather steep, but I wanted a decent brand that wouldn't give any problems, like blowing.

I will get one of those spacer made up for you mate! Just need to order a gasket for a template. It works a treat. Any M6 bolt will do the job just make sure you cut it to the right length, ie not too short so it rips the thread out the blower and not too long so it bottoms out and doesnt tighten down properly.

You mentioned a prob with the oil pump in your TXT. Whats wrong with that?
