    JE Pistons

I'm in the process of trying to get myself a nice set of JE pistons. First, I was thinking of ordering "the usual stuff", but after reading a couple of threads here my head started spinning.

I know (since I read them...) there are several threads regarding JE pistons, but hey, stuff could have happened since then.

So I got a couple of questions...

    - Where to order?
    - Options? I guess the first orders were pretty "stock", but that some people later on ordered with gas ports, total seal rings, grooves, and so on. If You have JE pistons - what did you get and what are your experiences?
    - Lowering the valve pockets - I've seen booth .5mm and 1.5mm, what's really necessary? pros/cons?
    - Does the dealer have blueprints of the stock piston, or do I need to send one in, or perhaps get a ref #?
    - Estimated price tag?

    Thanks in advance!

there are many here that will help you with answers.I was only wondering...am i the only one that choose mahle which come straight with a code for 81.26mm and 81.51mm cylinder to fit right away on the block?
Looking into pros and cons of pistons,i would never choose forged pistons if i were not to go over 600hp crank.Pkmotorsports in Germany has used mahle pistons for engines up to 650hp without any problems!!! AND you practically get zero oil consumption!! which you usually get on forged pistons.(i have around 300ml on 10000Kms)

Very true , also speak to Aelred.

It all depends why you need the pistons, if it's just that you need an overbore and your not changing compression ratio then the Mahle are a good but expensive option.

If you need lower compression ratio, piston options and a bore larger that 81.5 that Mahle are off the menu as they are not custom made.

Spoke to Aelred last night actually and he can get a very competitive price on more than one set of JE... However they need to be the same dimension and setup pistons. I'm after 82.5mm with 8.5:1 CR......

Other option is Joe in the states who is around the same price as Aelred,

This piston in the Wossner range should fit the standard 3b/aby block...

Been quietly thinking about this for the worlds slowest engine build project... Hopefully slowest to build and not worlds slowest engine - LOL.

What is the weight of the various different piston choices available ?

              Stock items
              Mahle replacements
              Forged Alloy

I know plenty of people have run big power engines on stock pistons, usually with forged / uprated conrods. If there is a large weight benefit with forged pistons - making a much more free-revving engine then its worth serious consideration.

                Well...

the wossner weights are in the catalogues, wont know true value until i get mine (2nd worlds slowest engine build).

                Got a linky for Mahle...?

The 7a pistons are still connected to the rods...so dont know weight.

We need new thread for piston specs mr mods. please

true what you said jamo! mahle is 8.9:1 with stock flange,so any change in comp ratio needs to be done with other flange

Hah, i think that title is safely mine I'll weigh my pistons for you and see what the difference is, its not much but you can tell by holding them in your hand the JE's are lighter.

Good info - thanks Aelred... I have an old standard piston in the garage that someone gave me years ago. I really must get some decent scales and weigh that for comparison.

Please note that these are not the standard JE pistons that people here have bought including myself. I cannot remember but i am sure the pistons that most people have from JE are heavier then this. The pistons that I mentioned are true racing pistons.

On another note the original pistons are very very good and I seen big BHP with the original piston with no problems. Having said that they are heavier.
