2.5 5cyl engine, running in period?

right.. i've got the GTi engineering RE2500 engine in now.

had a problem with the baffled sump as the baffles had cracks in them, so had to weld them up. and a few problems getting the oil pick up fitted. But at least now it in anyway.

    -

A question i have is, because of the new piston rings, what would you say is best advice for running them in?

i've got mineral oil in the engine at the moment, and so far i've done about 200 miles and have not revved past 3,000 rpm.

A friend of mine recommended a 500 mile run-in period, but another friend said 1000!

Just after your advice on this guys... cheers.

    Gaz.

    Good news mate,

Nice to hear its in and running? Hows it sound??

I recommend 500-600 miles on the mineral oil. Dont rev past 3k and dont strain the engine (always knock it down a gear rather than squeezing the throttle more)

change to semi-synthetic then run for a further 600-700miles and gradually increase revs in this period (but not necessarily load)

After 1200-1500 miles increase load also.

Best of luck, i assume your not bothered about the NG downpipe then

    Good job!!

      how do!

yea.. seems to be running ok. funny, exhaust sounds a tad quieter than my old engine but maybe thats because of the new exhaust ans inlet gaskets.

at the front there is a little bit of a noise at the top of the engine, but maybe that's the solid lifters? and an effect of the mineral oil maybe? perhaps it will quieten down with some semi synthetic when i've run it in?

other than that it seems to be running OK. sounds a bit different to my engine at 3,000rpm. sounds less raspy (new manifold gaskets perhaps) but sounds a little deeper.

i can't wait to open it up, its funny, it doesn't feel hugely different to mine below 3,000rpm. but then i start to get that feeling there is more to come from there onwards, unfortunately thats when i have to ease off lol

how do you plan on bedding in the rings if you dont apply liberal throttle to force the rings out? did you not use proper runnning in oil?

Always flat out out of the box only way...

Once put a engine in one night that i had rebuilt with rings ceramic pistons etc. Got a few hundred hard miles on it that night and changed the oil at the track day the next morning. Then spent over 1 hour on the track. Thats the way to do it.

On a turbo engine turn the boost down as low as you can get it when running in. 0 boost will do just fine.

could u explain a little more?

also, can anyone recomend me an oil ? i'm now at 700 miles.

should i change the filter too? what would be a good brand?

                        cheers.. gaz.

                          This will explain why.
I have built rally engines that have been finished the morning of the event, they have been run hard on the rollers oil & filter then done an event with no problems- then had ones fail that have been gradually revved higher over mileage (3000 for 100 miles etc etc..)
For oil :http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-339-find...r-product.aspx but a good 10W40 semi syn will do.

Do an oil and filter change, use an engine flush, then get a genuine or OE filter and don't EVER use anything else!!

well i have mineral oil in for the last 650 miles.

i haven't driven it hard in the first 20 miles or anythink..

will my rings be no good now? what's best to do from here onwards?

comma or millers still do proper running in oil basically its a mineral oil with no deturgents or coatings. when a block is bored it is honed to give the rought cross-hatch appearance. what this does is wear in to allow the rings to seat and create a good seal. if you use synthetic oils from the off the rings get coated and the bores also creating a lovely slip-slide. no good fopr bedding in. giving it some creates cylinder pressure thus forcuing the rings out in turn bedding into the cylinder wall.

there are lots of opinions on doing it but its basically proven a harder run-in creates better compression and thus an better performing engine. look at repmobiles. take 2 identical cars, screw one from the off and tickle the other about, which is quickest?

id drop the oil. put some runnnig in oil in or mineral and go give it half throttle from 2k upwards tio 5k or so and let the engine run down of its own accord. do this for 20 minutes or so. change the oil again. go find some hills and drive at moderate rates up and down.

with a alloy block the period to run in is a lot shorter due to the metal softness. withn cast iron you got a bit longer. i wouldn't worry just yet.

follow the procedure and all should be well.
