    Coolant Issues RS2

    Hi ALL

I am finding my coolant level requires topping up on a regular basis, ( which is beginning to annoy me) as everything that can be checked has been, head gasket replaced at great expense! Radiators replaced, hoses tightened, pressure tested and so on. I have been told this is normal for the age of car. I use daily with a mixture of driving hard and traffic jam stop starts. Its kept outside.

Has anyone else got similar issues with S2's or RS conversions? Would be great to know.

    thanks for reading

there are 2 more points where you could have a leak other than pipes etc.

1)the actual water pump, which you cant really easily see if it is leaking if you dont put everything apart(mine leaked 3 months after replacement!!)

2)at the rear of the block there is a plastic exit for water where a pipe goes to,just above the white thermal sensor for the ECU coolant temperature. That plastic adaptor on the block may also leak which needs either a seal or replacement the whole bit.It has 2 allen bolts i think.

I bet its the little begger under the inlet mani the water feed to the turbo, power steering pump needs to be removed to even see it!
No way should you have to top it up! Age of car! Eh!

Yep I bet that pipe as well, the turbo coolant return hose as well or the worse case scenario leaking heater matrix.

            rs2 coolant

I would agree with the last two replys, had the same issue with mine , then changed the thermostate, saw the little pipe weeping, no longer topping up although i did undo the union to change it .

Yep just had mine done, leak was subtle for a long time before it just went. Any dried coolant residue anywhere in the engine bay ??
              Oh & radiators ?

                Hello Chaps
There seems to be a lot of gunk underneath the hydraclic fluid reservoir area, and underneath the expansion reservoir tank for starters. Its differcult to tell as it looks oily and gunky. The problem stablilized after the head gasket was done, didn't need toppping up for best part of 10 months, but suddenly now its getting worse.

I think these places where it could be leaking are a pain to reach hence the "age of car" thing I am getting.

How much is the heater matrix in case I need to do that?

Thanks for the replies, it helps to understand

Heater matrix leak will be wet carpet time. The matrix is cheap, its the labour to do it that will hurt. Dash out job IIRC.

                  DIY is no fun either.

The gunk under the Hydraulic fluid reservoir is likely to be a spill where someone filled it. It attracts dirt and dust like hell. Give it a clean up around there and see if it comes back...

                  Cheers,

                  Steve.

Also make sure connections on pipes to reservoir are real tight.
Fluid is real thin and creeps out if not tight.
I used jubilee clips instead of oe clips.

                      Hello chaps

Thankfully its not wet carpets time! But at least I would know where the damn leak is I suppose. It feels like just when one is found another one springs up like mole hills. Anyway, I will follow as you say, I suspect its going to be one those turbo hoses which prove differcult to reach.
I can't see fluid on the ground, I guess its evaporating off being a hot area before it hits terra firma, I'll let you know what I learn.

                      Thanks

Where abouts are you based as i have a water testing kit with all the attachments it pressurizes the system and then you can locate the leak if your close give me a shout

Sounds like you need a ner rad to me, if it is leaking from that side. I had to have one as it sheared the bottom mounting off and ripped a hole in the rad..............Good luck and hope you get it sorted soon
