Sorry, to re-phrase, it gets no louder but is still evident.

If thats the case then its very unlikely to be a rotational component, ie belts or cams etc, more like something vibrating against bodywork or another component or similer?

Check the water pump for noise too. I don't know what the I5 engines have fitted but many VAG cars suffer from plastic impellors failing. They can rattle before the they stop completely.
I shall give this a go out of desperation but the noise is definatly from the top end of the engine.

Well there isn't normally a rocky idle but it was chugging a couple of days back when I started it up which is very out of character.

The knocking gets no worse as the revs are raised so hopefully this isn't the problem we have at hand.

    Bloody car!

    Nutsacks!

I gave the PAS belt abit of a spray up with WD40 and it didn't do much to be honest but it was definatly worth a try. I had my screwdriver out (quiet in the back!) and was trying to establish where on earth the vibration was coming from and so far I haven't been able to directly trace it.

The alternator seems fairly tight and there was no vibration coming off of the alternator so I did rule that out but I shall go and check the bracket when I get a spare moment.

The only noise I could pick up through the screwdriver was from the rocker cover but to me it was just the normal tappety noise you get from the lifters and I couldn't hear any knocking from elsewhere.

If standing over the engine bay the noise definatly seems to be coming from cam area/region so perhaps it is something to do with the distributor but it does sound closer to the front of the car, i.e. cam chain.

I shall give it a try, thanks guys!

I'm crossing my fingers here as if something abit more serious has gone wrong then I am well and truely ******ed as I haven't the money to send it off to have it rebuilt properly and I haven't the mechanical knowledge to do something that major by myself.

a 2nd vote for the alternator bracket, sounds awful when this is on its way out or alternator is loose in it.

A touch of WD40 on the PAS belt should sort it
