Right, just thought I would all let you know the outcome.

Basically the bearing on the waterpump was completely shot and thats why it was making such a racket. The mechanic reckons that it didn't have much life left in it at all.

So now the car has had a new waterpump, cambelt, v belts, idle pulley and tensioner and feels/sounds an awful lot better for it.

    Thanks for the help guys!

Well as you say Darren, there is no harm in trying.

I had a look and everything appeared nice and tight but I shall give it a go.

    Thanks.

Rob, i know you've had it diagnosed as waterpump BUT just try adjust the alternator belt a fraction tighter on the alternator. I had exactly the same the other week, see here:

Belt seemed fine when i pressed for flex, but for the sake of a 5 min job of undoing & retightening 1 nut and turning that adjustment wheel....give it a go. Make sure you still have the spanner on the adjuster giving a bit of pressure, whilst tightening up the smaller nut on top. I still cant believe it worked for me coz it sounded like a real mechanical clack clack noise..

Hope this gets it sorted for you.. Let us know what the fault (if found) is on the water pump..

    Cheers

Just took the car to the normal guy I use (he isn't fond of S2s oddly enough but knows alot about them....bloody UR quattro drivers!! ) and he has confirmed that it is indeed the waterpump.

So on monday the car will be going in to get a new waterpump, cam pulley, idle pulley, cambelt and a new lease of life!

I already have a subwoofer to drown some of the noise out!

Right, so I think I have finally tracked down the noise today! For a couple of days I thought the neighbours thought I was completely nuts by standing over the top of the engine holding a screwdriver to my ear but now I KNOW they think I'm nuts as after I touched the waterpump with the screwdriver I could feel the knocking instantly and let out a big cheer only to turn and see a few of my neighbours looking at me open mouthed.

Anyway when I put my ear to the screwdriver the knocking noise was almost deafening so I definately think I have found the offending part.

The car will remain at home and undriven until I get the chance to get it repaired as I don't want to risk the waterpump giving up on me when I decide to take the car out.

Thanks for the help guys and I shall definatly let you know how I get on when I take it to the audi specialist I use for a second opinion.

Made sure your oil is not below the max line? If mine gets below the "max" the tappens start singing.

To get rid of the noise simply install a large base tube and a amp.

you should be abvle to get the end of your screw driver onto part of the water pump housing without removing any covers etc - its "under" the PAS pump.

The water pump is driven by the cambelt, its under the plastic covers.

I've had a little bit of time to tinker under the bonnet today so I thought I would check a few things over.

The alternator and PAS pump appear to be fine. I was attempting to check the waterpump but I can't actualy find the bloody thing. As much as it embarrasses me to ask....where the hell is the water pump?!

The noise is definatly coming from what I would describe as roughly the middle of the engine below the Inlet Manifold.

It doesn't quite sound as bad as I remember but the noise is still there regardless so obviously something is not right.
