Have you got a boost leak testing kit?
It sounds exactly like the problem I had, which turned out to be a crap connection to the MAF.
You are about an hour from me, and would be more than welcome to come down and swap some bits over to rule things out if its any help

one thing I will say is the power output has been going 'downhill' for the last few weeks.....none of the usual "kick" in the back sensation...then I started to think I had a boost leak, hence buying the gauge....

could a "dodgy" plug lead to the same problem

Mike: My suggestions were intended to eliminate potential problems, i.e. if you ignore the possibility as being "impossible", then you may never find the probelm. People in the US have installed 1.8t coil packs from a known supplier, not knowing that the coils need to be trimmed (both hard plastic and the rubber sealing ring) and, as a result, the coils were not fully snapped down on to the plugs. Hence, my suggestion to check the coil plugs (and plugs) for tightness.

That said, it is possible that a coil pack is slowly failing. What is the PN on the coil pack? They should be 115L or 115R. If the PN has been ground off, you probably have the inferior 115J or 115H coil packs (the ones that were in the first recall).

I have no idea what a 1.8t "upgraded kit" means unless it has 115R coils (??)

sorry dave....the kit was purchased from Quattrotonics last april as a '1.8T upgraded coil kit'..as the receipt says in my service history....there does seem to be a theme running here....the 2 suggestions made, boost leak and coil issue will be the first on my list of things to do....

another thing...how's life treating you Dave??...sorry I didn't get chance to say 'cheerio' before we left...we do miss the old west coast but on the other hand glad to be back home, working and in a rather nice S2!!....

Check the PNs on the coil packs. If they do not say 115L or 115R, then I suspect you got the inferior 115J or H coils.

Things are okay. Perfect timing (not) - my project in Sooke is now going into Stage 3 (after a two year break) so I would have got to see you in person (again).

I've taken you off the Vancouver S-car club mailing list as it doesn't make much sense to keep you on. Too bad I never got you to meet up with Colin Gans in Victoria - he has an Ersatz S2 coupe.

                  Check those coils for PNs.

dodgy knock sensor and it retards ignition under load? Not sure what the test parameters are but no doubt sum1 on here can give u th figures. Try a bottle of octane booster and see if it helps.

                      Hey Dave....
so your out in "sunny Sooke" ...hope the locals aren't giving you a hard time!?!??
                      :mischeif:

I have tried to find the PN on the coils but cannot seem to find any....whereabouts are they...

the more I think about it the more a boost leak could be the problem...as the issue only happens when I try and give it full boost....the car accelerates fine when I drive 'normally'.....it still pulls well just not the usual kick in the back from an 'on form' S2!!.....

I really appreciate all the help everyone has given me trying to solve this "nightmare"

                      thanks again
