Have checked the codes and ALL I keep getting is 2224.....

Max charge pressure exceeded (or similar!)

Looks and sounds like a leak, but I really dont know where.....

could be the wastegate diafraghm spilt.I think i have read somewhere that it can give you that code of exceeding charge pressure...

If you haven't checked the wastegate diaphragm yet, then that would be a good place to look. Problem is that getting the wastegate apart can be a major job if there's corrosion in there.

Like you, I had a boost leak 2224 on my RR quattro (ABY) and it was driving me insane. Put the foot down and just when you were getting somewhere it was like hitting a brick wall.

I decided to go the whole hog due to two corroded wastegate studs that meant it wasn't coming apart for anybody. Brand new wastegate fitted (£1k) and hey presto, I've got foot to the floor boost. I'm still thinking it was the diaphragm but even with the old wastegate off the car, I still cant get it apart.

A tip for everybody with a turbo - take the wastegate apart and copper-grease the studs. If the diaphragm gets split its a simple repair - so long as you can access it!

Thats what I thought to begin with, but wouldnt it show up on a boost leak test if it had a split in it...?
I actually tried getting the top off the other day but I couldnt prize it apart, nuts came off the top but thats about it
Any suggestions of how to get the top off and how much pressure to apply?

          Cheers

if you managed to get all the studs out of the wastegate cap then you can just give it a tap with a mallet and it should come off...usually the diaphram sticks to the cap thats all.

If all seems airtight, then next step is to check tightness of the jubilee clips, on my 3b it was beset by constant overboost problems and each time i checked it was the clips working loose over time, especially off the exit pipe from the x-member and the one linking to the pipe over the rocker cover. Tip, get a 7mm or 8mm socket and tighten them that way otherwise the heads will get damaged from the screwdriver......in my case definately made a big big difference. I have since replaced them all to be 100% sure its ok

Thanks for the info guys.....but are you sure all sure it must be a leak somewhere.....
Is there anything else that triggers overboost protection and gives you the 2224 code?

Will try the "mallet" technique later and see what happens, must admit, I did not try too hard when attempting to get the top off the wastegate the other day.

              Cheers

I think I am right in sayin that the wastegate diaphram will not show up on a leak test due to it being on the ehaust side of the turbo...

Then that would be a first!!! Getting the nuts off the studs without shearing something can be a difficult enough job. I'm guessing you meant nuts not studs?

I wish I could agree..... I've got two wastegates on the bench - one is from my WR quattro and one from my RR quattro. I understand that both are effectively identical to the ABY S2/RS2 wastegate and NEITHER of them is coming apart with a slight tap of a mallet.

If the cap has no resistance from corroded studs, then it can fly-off to a distance of 67+ feet from the spring pressure alone. A sticky diaphragm isn't going to prevent that. Every time I've seen this problem, the wastegate cap has been secured to the base with at least two seized studs.

A faulty ECU could do it - but I'll eat my hat if it isn't a 'leak' of some description. If you want to start on the less expensive side then go for the wategate frequency valve and the the small bore (3mm) vacuum tube which runs from the dump valve to the inlet manifold.

When you get to the point of trying to wedge a large screwdriver between the top and bottom cups of the wastegate with a hammer, take 5mins to have a coffee and come back to read this. Best done off the car with a replacement wastegate to hand I'm afraid

                    Oh F*ck...

Has anyone got a spare wastegate....?
Just took mine off and broke a small piece of the main piston type thing (no idea what its called) inside, its about 80mm in diameter.
Has anyone got one of these or a complete wastegate?

Better tell you guys how I managed to break it.....

Whilst undoing the centre nut I had hold of the smaller cap and as the nut came undone, the whole thing slipped and I whacked this part (whatever its called)

Can anyone help....all I am trying to find out is if the diaphragm is knackered

                    Cheers

So you've got the cap off the wastegate then?

That's good as it shouldn't be too dificult to get some of the internals. Difficult to understand what you've done without a picture though.

I've got two complete wategates on the bench but they are useless without being able to open them up.

I'm sure someone will be along to offer assistance with the internal parts. Have you managed to get a look at the diaphragm yet?

Yep....Diaphragm is in near perfect condition
Was actually hoping for it to be fooked, but one less thing to worry about I guess.

@LYT4X - Dont suppose you want to sell me one of those wastegates do you...? I only really need 1 internal, but would probs be handy for bits etc...

                        Cheers

Did your wastegate look like the one on the left or the right in this photo?

If it looked like the one on the left then the bolt/nut is your problem. Someone has bodged it. You just need a standard cap and spring to sort it.

                            This might be naive but,

Is it a bit of a daft and very expensive idea to replace the standard ceased waste-gate with one like this from 034?

                            http://www.034motorsport.com/product...roducts_id=569

It sounds like it might be a bit of overkill for a standard car, but it could also future proof it against more substantial future upgrades?

Are the internal parts for the repair of the standard one not available individually from the dealer, or it it a question that the parts are stupid dear?

As I say just learning a bit about aspect of an S2. The views or comments of the more learned are naturally very welcome.

Good luck with your repair endeavours.

I'd say beg steal, borrow or buy a boost leak detection kit? I think they are comparatively cheap considering the grief this issue is causing you.

                            Kind regards.

Would be pointless as they aren't coming apart. Silly getting something else to give yet more grief. I bought a new OEM wastegate from Pete at quattrocorner. Looks very nice on the RR but (unlike you) I still dont know for sure if the diaphragm was the problem. In fact, I still don't know exactly where my problem was. I replaced all the hoses, WFV, wategate etc and problem is solved. Expensive I know, but the RR gets everything it needs.

As mentioned in one of my previous posts - Try a new (not expensive) WFV first. It means getting in and removing hoses, so when you need to put them back you know they are secure.

BTW, if your wategate cap looks like the one on the left........... get another one.......

                                ECU Overboost Protection.

                                Hi,

Animal Mother is correct (The pictures are of my old wastegate) as it caused me all sorts of over boost issues with my car, before I swapped it out for a standard, un-tampered wastegate. (i.e. the previous owner of my car did the ‘Frankenstein’ mod to the top of the Waistgate to get even more compression on the wastegate spring, to get more boost.) Thus causing the ECU to limit the boost as the wastegate was doing nothing about it.

The only issue I got back for free when I changed the wastegate top cover, was that I had to adjust the new wastegate (slightly increased the original setting to get it back to normal) to remove general loss of boost, as the spring was now too slack for the ECU and engine mod’s I had done. (This time the wastegate was opening too early and the ECU could do nothing to overcome this)

It worth a look, just to remove it from your equation.

Even I am thinking of purchasing a vacuum leak detector, just to make periodically sure all’s OK.

You can leak check your wastegate diaphragm but it will only test your wastegate diaphragm, nothing else. This assumes your wastegate top port is still open to atmospheric pressure as in the picture. (i.e. no hose connected to it. If not, remove the hose and connect the vacuum pump/gauge to the wastegate and do the test)

Good luck and keep us all posted on your particular findings.

                                Regards,

                                Andy H.
