effect of RS2 turbo on a almost std ABY?

The turbo on my s2 Avant is a little tired, and I have recently purchased a RS2 turbo, the car is standard engine wise apart from MTM chip which the previous owner had installed, I think it runs at 0.4bar

my question is, if I put the RS2 turbo on my current setup am I likely to see any improvement power/torque

or is this not going to be good?

I am planning to get a new manifold, new intercooler, injectors, and 2.75" or 3" turbo back system, but just not yet

    advise would be helpfull..

    cheers Keith

hi keith, i think you should get all the other stuff and put it all on same time, then remap it . I think with just putting rs2 turbo on, ur not really gonna gain much more
power u need the other stuff too

but with my turbo thats on the car now being very tired, would the rs2 turbo run ok with my engine?

The main problem is i took the car over 2 QST a couple of weeks ago for a boost leak check and to see if the car was running at the same power/torque as when the car was chipped by then 3 years ago, and it was about 20lbs/ft down on the 3year old rolling road graph over about 60% of the rev range..

So will the rs2 turbo put it back 2 about the same?

The RS2 turbo won't spin up as quick as the K24, and it will be limited by the tuning at the top end. It won't harm anything, it will just be a waste of an RS2 turbo.

Why not get the k24 reconditioned with a larger compressor wheel from TD or AET... should cost the same as an RS2 turbo, will work with your current setup bar a remap and will cost a little less than RS2.

ive already got the rs2 turbo, should b delivered monday, as i said in the first post, i will b replacing everything, exhaust manifold, intercooler exhast system with sport cat, injectors and a homefry rs2 chip, but i just want 2 reinstate the origional power when it was chiped 3 years ago (283bhp and 297lbs/ft) just like 2 know in the very short term if the rs2 turbo will put it bk 2 where it was

Yes at the top of the revs, no in the low - mid range

i thought from previous threads and knowledge picked up that the ABY has a 250 k chip in which gives 1.0 - 1-.4 bar ?

With rs2 TURBO would a con rod upgrade not be a wise idea as MTM chip + bigger turbo = blown engine.

Isnt Samcos a better bet to get the leak sorted and back to normal`sh?

Have had mine QST`d with K24 but have 7a inlet and outlet and only getting about 260 at the mo, so samco`s on way should sort that out plus a 3b ( standard) inlet cam!

Hope that contributes the right way?

RS2s run the same rods as AAN and ABY and they're fine on a remap at 370-380bhp, you can run a GT3071 on a standard bottom end or any turbo within reason but you have to be very careful when mapping it to keep the torque safely below the limit, I think it was found to be 400ftlbs but best check, it was either Steve H or Mark H who had the misfortune of finding that out but it's also worth mentioning that Pembo destroyed some 3B rods on a k24 running silly boost, albeit with a restrictor, the post wasn't too long ago and all this was discussed then too. The problems with rods turning to bananas is usually on 3Bs where you have the added fun of the dizzy to take into account as ypu get spark hop leading to pre-ignition and the associated problems. ABYs are better in terms of ignition problems but they're still old engines now. If I was having a standard bottom end with RS2 turbo mapped I'd make sure that the tuner was aware and didn't put the boost too high, still produce the power but you'd have to accept a slight drop in torque in the upper mid-range.

i dont have a boost leak, Kim Collins did the leak test and there was no problem, he said his opinion was the turbo was tired and thats why it was down on torque, the bhp was almost identical 2 what it was 3 years ago

MTM chips are very conservative, 7A inlet and exhaust is a little overkill, better to go for 3B inlet and exhaust and enjoy the torque, it'll still rev to 7k and give you nice midrange torque. Not sure what MRC offer for 3Bs in terms of chips but might be a bit more aggressive and give you more power with the boost leaks sorted

Did he describe how the turbo was tired? I would associate that with a lot of blue smoke or oil loss.

DarrenM has just put an RS2 turbo on a stockish ABY so check his thread for what he did and the problems he's since had with it, I think they're more specific to his car though but better to have a read and make sure IMO.

Perhaps he was trying to sell you a turbo as he couldn't be ****d to check for boost leaks without stinging you for it.
