    Drinking ze oil

The old girl is starting to have rather a heavy habit on oil and a little water is going bye bye also. Not ideal. Always seem to be putting 0.5l in here and there and I'm really not doing much distance. I've used 3litres this year and done perhaps 500 miles... but a lot of that is thrashing it!

I've plumbed in the catch tank to the inlet and I checked the tank today and there was nothing in it, this indicates to me that it's being sucked into the inlet or that it's blocked at the engine end. I'll need to check this out. I think that I need to rethink the catch tank and perhaps try and just fit a filter. I might leave it all plumbed in then fit a filter on the end and put it in front of the air box so that any fumes are ingested with the flow of air. There's plenty of room in front of my bodged airbox. Problem is that it could pool oil in a few places so I'll need to do some investigation. No biggie, just need some dry weather and energy.

Next thing to check is all the water hoses to make sure there's not a tiny leak although it is a small amount that I'm losing.

Last thing to check is the torque on the ARPs, should be 65ftlbs but they do loosen off over time .

I might have to revert back to 10W60 as I'm currently on a 5W50 tip as it's fine for road use.

    Any more ideals?

Ah! Need to have a look at the rear crank seal as it was replaced last year and I've not checked it's progress since, All Audi fitted a seal only rather than the pre-fitted one and I have since been warned that the OE one is the only good one to get...

Could be turbo seals but very little way of checking that other than playing a waiting game

Apart from that she's flying as posted elsewhere! They always do with 165k on them, it's just for how long

Find a garage that will do a cylinder leak down test to see if any of the valves or rings are shot/leaking.
does it puff any smoke on start up?(valve stem oil seals hardened??)

Valve stems are another possiblity, I'll have to speak to my local mechanic.

I'm losing a bit of water, no oil though, hoping its not the head gasket again.. Can't see a leak anywhere.

Yeah, might have to check them. Going to unplumb the catch tank from the inlet so that I can elimintae the breather. Turbo could be on it's way out, hence why the W50 isn't thick enough for the thrashing that it receives every now and again.

How do you test valve stem seals?

Leaking valve stem seals will give a puff of blue smoke on startup. Oil seeps down valve stems and collects on valves/in chamber when standing still.

Cheers, I've been leaving it a bit recently so will get someone to look when I start it up.
