    Stuttering at low rpm

The S2 has really tested my patience this week.

On Thursday I will be getting married and I planned to drive the S2 to the church. However, on Sunday I had to replace one of the front wishbones due to the bushes disintegrating, Monday I had to replace the battery as that died and now the car is running like crap.

It is only once it is warm.

Between 1000 and 2000 rpm it sounds terrible, like it's miss-firing. it sounds like a scooby and that's not good for a 5 cylinder.

    I have done the following:

    - Pulled the codes and couldn't get anything, just the usuall 2111 due to engine not running
    - Cleaned the MAF with IPA and cleaned the connections
    - Cleaned the idle stabilisation valve with IPA
    - Cleaned the crank positions sensor and it's connections
    - Reset the ECU countless tmes
    - Checked all the fuses - none blown

Just wondered if anyone had any similar symptons before. I've done a search but struggled.

Get me to the church on time please!

    Is it running on four?.
What happens if you drive it?.
Is it just between 1000 and 2000rpm?.

I think it might be running on four. There was very little difference compared to the other cylinders when I unplugged cylinder 2 injector.

The thing is, that once past the 2000rpm mark and the boost comes on, the car seems to smooth out more. I took it right to the limiter on the way home tonight in 2nd and it was suprisingly smooth.

At idle, if you blip the throttle it's very spluttery. When I was pootling around in 3rd/4th gears and thus asking the engine to work a bit at low rpm it was terrible.

Just trawling through some more threads and still none the wiser. I can't get the engine speed sensor off as the bolt head has stripped

        My guesses:

        Sparkplug
        Sparkplug wire (connector on ABY)
        Power Output Stage dying
        Coil dying

Suggest you have a read on this:

Should help to track down the problem.

          That's ideal, thanks.

I'll have a play around today and see what I can find.

              Just to close this out.

It was a faulty POS unit that caused cylinder 2 to missfire. After swapping the POS leads the missfire moved to cylinder 5.

I limped up the M5 on 4 cylinders on Tuesday which was miserable.

Tris (Merlin's S4 was an absolutle legend with his on phone diagnostics).
This enabled me to swap a POS with my best man's V6 coupe which got me to the church on all 5 cylinders and the biggest simle on my face.

I will post a picture on my return as I'm currently in Vancouver but the car looked the best it ever has with it's ivory ribbons and sun drenched paintwork.

              I love my S2 again!

Thanks to everyone who made the use of my S2 on my wedding day possible.

Hello!! I am in Vancouver BC and would be willing to buy you and your wife a pint (or glass) if you want to meet up. We have a bit of an UrS club here (no real S2s but a couple of ersatz ones). All UrS4s and UrS6s.

PM me if you are interested.

                    Brilliant work all round!

I was going to suggest plugs, rubber boots, coilpack and POS's but I guess we all knew it would be ignition related...

Congratulations on your big day Dan. If you read this in time, sit back and relax and enjoy your honeymoon.

                    All the best.

                      Glad your day went well,

POSs can be a bit of a "piece of scrap", putting it politely.

BTW, thank you for posting the result / cure of your problem, always nice to have answers / solutions to these types of issues.

                      Kind regards.

Thanks for the offer Dave but unfortunatley Vancouver was just a stop off for us on our way to Hawaii. Finally here now after over 24 hours of travelling but it's worth it!

Anyway, as a thanks to those that helped, here's my pride and joy all dolled up for the big day.
My wife and I (still strange to say that) got a new Rolls Royce Phantom tothe reception which was incredible but I gave the S2 a longing glance out the window as we pulled away.

                        Thanks guys!

Whereabouts in Hawaii are you Dan? Anna and went to Maui for our honeymoon and thoroughly enjoyed the place.

(I am assuming also that you won't be logging in to here much now either! )

                          Have a good trip anyway.

                          Cheers,

                          Steve.

P.S. I can't see the pic as I am at work (PB is blocked) but I am sure the S2 was looking suitably shiney....
