    3B distributor?

How is it removed? There is a headless bolt that holds a metal plate over a nut - why?

Do you have to remove the gear to remove the distributor?

How do you change that plastic gear to a metal gear?

Where do you get a metal gear?

And - how do you align the distributor if the cams have been removed?

This is new to me so need some help please.

I believe its an anti tamper cover, it comes off with a bit of help.Dont need to put it back on.

There is a pin that goes through the gear(bigger at one end than the other). You will need to press it out, its in there pretty tight.

you have to remove the dizzy to remove the gear, not the other way around.

There is a bloke call urquattrorob on ebay that flogs them, he always has at least one on there. He must have made his first million by now.I got one off him, although i cant say that the quality was 1st class though.Needed to file out the drilled hole to make it line up with dizzy hole, you might be lucky and get one for less than 20 quid but have seen them going for £50+.Think he was pissed up when he made mine.

      Hi Doug

The bolt that holds the nut cover on is one of those shear-off-when-it's-tight-enuf types. You have to grind or drill the head off to release the dist. Chisels have been used.. Just mark the position of the dist and put it back in the same place. The anti tamper thing is there because the timing cannot be altered this way. If you get it wrong enough it can fire on the wrong cylinder and blow a rod out through the block, but thats the reason you're getting rid of the plastic gear anyway aint it
Best thing to do as recommended by Mayer et al is to replace with a new distributor, not too expensive. The spindle wears too.
Mine actually had a metal gear already so I left it alone, it can be viewed with the cam cover off.

OK - is there a way to make sure that the distributor is in the correct place if you replace it, especially since the camshafts are out as well? Is there a point/mark the arm should be pointing to for Cylinder 1 TDC? (I have marked it - just want to make sure if there is an obvious way of doing it.

        Thanks for the replies.

There's a #1 cylinder line in the side rim of the distributor to where the rotor arm should point when on TDC. For more info take a look at http://www.sjmautotechnik.com/TROUBL...st.html#timing

And for the dizzy gear, you can get a metal one from Audi, a gear for sport quattro's KW-engine fits. Price is about 80 euros.

          There's also a how-to-change-the-dizzy-gear article (in english) at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/audifi...0Virranjakaja/

The 7A and the 3B have different letters at the end of the distributor part number - it is for a 3B Ur we took a head off today. I'll let the owner know and it might help if someone can tell us if they are interchangeable.

And thanks for all the links.

Sal - do you have the 7A inlet manifold? If so, can you send me some pictures of it please?

Doug, i found it easier to line this mark (can just see it in the pic) with the notch on the dizzy body, seens a bit more accurate IMO.
i'd fit the dizzy after the cams are in.
7a one is the same but has a slightly wider rotor arm tip, this may be the reason for the different part number
